Thomas F. Sullivan
Thomas F. Sullivan (February 25, 1878 – August 27, 1957) was an American government official who served as commissioner of the Boston Police Department and chairman of the city's transit department. Early life Sullivan was born on February 25, 1878, in South Boston. He graduated from The English High School in 1895. During the Spanish–American War he served as a sergeant in Cuba with the 9th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He remained with the 9th Regiment until 1913, when he retired with the rank of major. During World War I he was colonel of the Tenth Infantry regiment of the Massachusetts National Guard. Boston Elevated Railway Sullivan began his transit career as a clerk for the New York and New England Railroad. In 1898, he joined the Boston Elevated Railway's road construction office. The Boston mayoral election of 1921 occurred on Tuesday, December 13, 1921. James Michael Curley, who had previously served as Mayor of Boston (1914–1918), was elected for the second time, defeating three other candidates. In 1918, the Massachusetts state legislature had passed legislation making the Mayor of Boston ineligible to serve consecutive terms. Thus, incumbent Andrew James Peters was unable to run for re-election. The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was set up on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal. The WPA's first appropriation in 1935 was $4.9 billion (about $15 per person in the U.S., around 6.7 percent of the 1935 GDP). Federal Emergency Relief Administration
The Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) was a program established by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933, building on the Hoover administration's Emergency Relief and Construction Act. It was replaced in 1935 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Prior to 1933, the federal government gave loans to the states to operate relief programs. One of these, the New York state program TERA (Temporary Emergency Relief Administration), was set up in 1931 and headed by Harry Hopkins, a close adviser to Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt asked Congress to set up FERA—which gave grants to the states for the same purpose—in May 1933, and appointed Hopkins to head it. Malcolm Nichols
Malcolm Edwin Nichols (May 8, 1876 – February 7, 1951) was a journalist and a U.S. political figure. Nichols served as the Mayor of Boston in the late 1920s. He came from a Boston Brahmin family and was the most recent Republican to serve in that post. Early years Nichols was the son of Edwin T. Nichols and Helen J. G. (Pingree) Nichols. The Sumner Tunnel is a road tunnel in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. It carries traffic under Boston Harbor in one direction, from Logan International Airport and Route 1A in East Boston. The tunnel originally deposited traffic at the west side of the North End, but with the completion of the Big Dig, it was modified to have two exits. Maverick station (known as Maverick Square) is a rapid transit station in Boston, Massachusetts. It serves the MBTA's Blue Line and is located at Maverick Square in East Boston.
