Thomas Cavendish
Sir Thomas Cavendish (1560 – May 1592) was an English explorer and a privateer known as "The Navigator" because he was the first who deliberately tried to emulate Sir Francis Drake and raid the Spanish towns and ships in the Pacific and return by circumnavigating the globe. Magellan's, Loaisa's, Drake's, and Loyola's expeditions had preceded Cavendish in circumnavigating the globe. His first trip and successful circumnavigation made him rich from captured Spanish gold, silk and treasure from the Pacific and the Philippines. His richest prize was the captured 600-ton sailing ship the Manila Galleon ''Santa Ana'' (also called ''Santa Anna''). He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I of England after his return. He later set out for a second raiding and circumnavigation trip but was not as fortunate and died at sea at the age of 31. Thomas Cavendish's Circumnavigation
Thomas Cavendish's circumnavigation was a voyage of raid and exploration by English navigator and sailor Thomas Cavendish which took place during the Anglo–Spanish War between 21 July 1586 and 9 September 1588. Following in the footsteps of Francis Drake who circumnavigated the globe, Thomas Cavendish was influenced in an attempt to repeat the feat. As such it was the first deliberately planned voyage of the globe. Having set out with his three ships, the English raided three Spanish settlements and captured or burned thirteen ships. Among these was a rich 600 ton sailing ship, a Manila Galleon called ''Santa Ana'' (also called ''Santa Anna''); the biggest treasure haul that ever fell into English hands. With only one ship left, Cavendish returned to England on 9 September 1588 completing a full circumnavigation of the earth in record time. Fore Street, Ipswich has been a prominent street in Ipswich, Suffolk since the fifteenth century. History In the fifteenth century Fore street was at the centre of the wool trade handling the exports from the wool towns of Hadleigh, Suffolk, Hadleigh, Kersey, Suffolk, Kersey and Lavenham. St Clement's Church, Ipswich
St Clement's Church, Ipswich, is a redundant church. The church is one of twelve medieval churches in Ipswich, six of which had been declared redundant by the 1970s. In the twenty-first century it was taken over by Ipswich Historic Churches Trust. The oldest parts of the church are fourteenth century, with additions from the fifteenth century, with substantial additions in the Tudor period to the tower and to the chancel in 1860 under the guidance of Frederick Barnes (architect), Frederick Barnes. For 500 years its congregation consisted primarily of the families of shipwrights, sailors, stevedores and merchants. Indeed, wool merchants funded the sixteenth century building of the tower.
