Thomas E. Kuenning Jr.
Thomas E. Kuenning Jr. is a retired brigadier general in the United States Air Force. Career Kuenning joined the Air Force in 1967 and underwent training at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Later that year, he was assigned to the 341st Strategic Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base. In 1973, he returned to Vandenberg Air Force Base and remained there until 1975. The following year, he was assigned to Strategic Air Command. Kuenning was then stationed at The Pentagon from 1979 to 1982, at which time returned to Malmstrom Air Force Base to assume command of the 564th Strategic Missile Squadron. In 1984, he returned to Strategic Air Command. Kuenning became Vice Commander of the 44th Strategic Missile Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base in 1987. Squadron Officer School (SOS), is a 5.5-week-long Professional Military Education (PME) course for U.S. Air Force and Space Force Captains, Department of the Air Force Civilian (DAFC) equivalents and International Officers. It fulfills the U.S. Air Force's requirement for primary developmental education (PDE). SOS is based at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and the in-residence version of the course is taught there. The Commendation Medal is a mid-level United States military decoration presented for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Each branch of the United States Armed Forces issues its own version of the Commendation Medal, with a fifth version existing for acts of joint military service performed under the Department of Defense. The Commendation Medal was originally only a service ribbon and was first awarded by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard in 1943. __NOTOC__ The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) is a military award presented to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States subsequent to January 16, 1969. An oak leaf cluster is a ribbon device to denote preceding decorations and awards consisting of a miniature bronze or silver twig of four oak leaves with three acorns on the stem. It is authorized by the United States Armed Forces for a specific set of decorations and awards of the Department of Defense, Department of the Army, and Department of the Air Force.
