Major General Thomas E. Ayres (born October 23, 1962) is a retired American military lawyer who served as the 20th Deputy Judge Advocate General of the United States Army. On January 18, 2018, President Donald Trump nominated him to become General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force. This nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 15, 2018. The General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force (acronym SAF/GC) is the chief legal officer of the U.S. Department of the Air Force. By U.S. law, the General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force is appointed from civilian life by the President of the United States upon the advice and consent of the United States Senate, and performs such duties as the Secretary of the Air Force specifies.
