Thomas Donne
Thomas Edward Donne (1860–1945) was a New Zealand civil servant, author, recreational hunter and collector of Māori people, Māori antiquities and New Zealand fine art. Career Railways Department Donne was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1859, son of William Donne and Rosa Bennett. He entered the New Zealand civil service in 1875 as a cadet in the Telegraph Department, Wellington and was soon transferred south. It was during his time in the Telegraph Department that he first met Joseph Ward who was to be a lifelong government colleague. Donne was subsequently transferred to the Railways Department and in 1876 he was appointed stationmaster and postmaster at Caversham, New Zealand, Caversham before being promoted to similar positions in larger towns. In 1885 Donne suffered a serious accident in Gore when he was thrown beneath a train but recovered after 6 months. He bore the scars of this accident for the rest of his life. Donne River
The Donne River is a river in the Southland Region of New Zealand. It arises in the Darran Mountains, and flows south-west to join the Cleddau River. State Highway 94 crosses the Donne just before it reaches the Cleddau. The river was named by W. G. Grave in 1907 after Thomas Edward Donne, the General Manager of the Tourism Department. ''Hei Tiki'', also known as ''Primitive Passions'' and ''Hei Tiki: A Saga of the Maoris'', is a 1935 American mock documentary film made in New Zealand by the eccentric Alexander Markey and released (with sound added) in America. The film gained notoriety in America for having scenes of nudity in film, nudity cut in various states. Markey directed and produced the film, also writing the screenplay and the "native melodies". His girlfriend Zoe Varney was credited as associate producer. Alfred Hill (composer), Alfred Hill, the original composer, and Ted Coubray, the original cameraman, were both fired and not credited; Coubray also lost his camera to Markey. The film also used unpaid Māori people, Māori extras, and taonga, their cherished tribal artefacts, were lent by the cast; Markey took the artefacts when he returned to America, leaving unpaid bills behind him.
