Thomas William Dobson JP (9 November 1853 – 13 May 1935) was a coal merchant and Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) representing Plymouth from 1906 to 1910. Thomas Dobson (1751 near Edinburgh, Scotland – 1823 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was a master printer most famous for having published the earliest American version of the ''Encyclopædia Britannica'', and the first in the United States to publish a complete Hebrew Bible. Dobson's Encyclopaedia The 18-volume third edition of the ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' began to be published in 1788 in Scotland, and was well received. It was by far the best edition of the ''Britannica'' to date, and remained so until roughly the 7th edition. (See History of the Encyclopædia Britannica for more details.) The third edition was completed in 1797, with a two-volume supplement added in 1801. Tom Dobson (1871 – 4 July 1937) was a Scottish-born rugby union forward who played club rugby for Cardiff and international rugby for Wales. His brother George Dobson was also a rugby player who represented Cardiff and Wales. Rugby career Dobson was born in the small fishing village of Keiss in Caithness, Scotland, but by 1873 his family was living in the Pontypridd area of Wales. Tom Dobson (cricketer)
Thomas Kell Dobson (12 January 1901 – 3 October 1940) was an English cricketer. Dobson was a left-handed batsman who bowled slow left-arm orthodox. He was born in Whitburn, County Durham. Dobson made his debut for Durham against the Lancashire Second XI in the 1921 Minor Counties Championship. He played Minor counties cricket for Durham from 1921 to 1936, making 83 Minor Counties Championship appearances. By the time ill health had forced his retirement from cricket, Dobson was considered to be the best all-rounder produced by the county, as well as the most successful player for Durham to that time. He scored 3,040 run at an average of 24.12, as well as 226 wickets at a bowling average of 16.70. No other player at that time had passed 2,000 runs and 200 wickets for the county.
