Thomas Daly (Irish Politician)
Thomas Daly (born June 1938), known as Tom Daly, was an Irish nationalist politician. Born in Belleek, County Fermanagh, Daly studied at St Columb's College before becoming a pub landlord. He joined the Nationalist Party, and was elected to Fermanagh County Council in 1968, serving until its abolition in 1972. The following year, he was a founder member of the Fermanagh branch of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), and was elected under this new label to the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1973, in which he represented Fermanagh and South Tyrone. He was also elected to the new Fermanagh District Council, serving as its first vice-chairman. Edward Daly (bishop)
Edward Kevin Daly (5 December 1933 – 8 August 2016) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and author. He served as the Bishop of Derry from 1974 to 1993. Daly took part in several civil rights marches and events during the Troubles. He came to wider attention during Bloody Sunday in January 1972, waving a blood-stained white handkerchief as he escorted a group carrying a mortally wounded protestor after British troops opened fire on demonstrators. The Northern Ireland Assembly was a legislative assembly set up by the Government of the United Kingdom on 3 May 1973 to restore devolved government to Northern Ireland with the power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive made up of unionists and nationalists. Bishop Of Derry
The Bishop of Derry is an Episcopal polity, episcopal title which takes its name after the monastic settlement originally founded at Daire Calgach and later known as Daire Colm Cille, Anglicised as Derry. In the Roman Catholic Church it remains a separate title, but in the Church of Ireland it has been united with Diocese of Derry and Raphoe, another bishopric. History At the Synod of Ráth Breasail in 1111 Ireland was divided up into ecclesiastical dioceses based on territorial units. One of these was for the Cenel Conaill who could have its Episcopal see either at Raphoe or Derry. At the Synod of Kells in 1152 however Derry and the Inishowen peninsula were moved from the diocese of the Cenel Conaill to that of the Cenel Eogain who controlled both areas.
