Thomas Coventry (died 1797)
Thomas Coventry (c. 1713–1797) was a British lawyer, financier and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1754 and 1780. He was born about 1713, the son of Thomas Coventry, a Russian merchant and the brother of William Coventry, 5th Earl of Coventry, and his wife Mary Green of Hambleton, Buckinghamshire. Coventry was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford in 1728, entered the Inner Temple in 1732 and was called to the bar in 1735. He married Margaret Savage, daughter of Thomas Savage of Elmley Castle, Worcestershire, in 1743. In 1751, Coventry became a Director of the South Sea Company. In 1754, he was returned as Member of Parliament for Bridport and was returned again in 1761. He became bencher of Inner Temple in 1766, and deputy governor of the South Sea Company in 1768. House Of Commons
The House of Commons is the name for the elected lower house of the bicameral parliaments of the United Kingdom and Canada. In both of these countries, the Commons holds much more legislative power than the nominally upper house of parliament. The leader of the majority party in the House of Commons by convention becomes the prime minister. Other parliaments have also had a lower house called a "House of Commons". History and naming The House of Commons of the Kingdom of England evolved from an undivided parliament to serve as the voice of the tax-paying subjects of the counties and of the boroughs. Knights of the shire, elected from each county, were usually landowners, while the borough members were often from the merchant classes. These members represented subjects of the Crown who were not Lords Temporal or Spiritual, who themselves sat in the House of Lords. The 1790 British general election returned members to serve in the House of Commons of the 17th Parliament of Great Britain to be summoned after the merger of the Parliament of England and the Parliament of Scotland in 1707. Political situation The Prime Minister since 1783, William Pitt the Younger, led a coalition of Whig and Tory politicians. The principal opposition to Pitt was a faction of Whigs led by Charles James Fox and the Duke of Portland. Dates of election The general election was held between 16 June 1790 and 28 July 1790. At this period elections did not take place at the same time in every constituency. The returning officer in each county or parliamentary borough fixed the precise date (see hustings for details of the conduct of the elections). This was the first general election after the law had been changed in 1785 to limit the maximum duration of polling in county elections to fifteen days. Richard Beckford
Richard Beckford (died 12 August 1796) was an English Whig politician. Biography Beckford was one the first mixed-race Member's of Pariament of the Parliament of the United Kingdom and served for the constituencies of Bridport, Arundel and Leominster from 1780 until his death in 1796. He previously, unsuccessfully, attempted to be elected to Hindon in both 1774, against Thomas Brand Hollis and Richard Smith, and the 1775 by-election when both Smith and Hollis were removed from office for bribery, but was unsuccessful. Beckford's father, William Beckford, was an MP and plantation owner, whilst his mother was a Jamaican slave. Lucius Cary (British Army Officer)
Lucius Ferdinand Cary, Master of Falkland (1735–1780) was a British Army officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1780. Cary was the only son of Lucius Charles Cary, 7th Viscount Falkland and his first wife, Jane Butler, daughter of Richard Butler of London, a conveyancer. He was educated at Westminster School from 1747 to 1752 and joined the army. He was an Ensign in the 2nd Foot Guards in 1752. In 1755 he became captain in the 14th Foot which was stationed in Gibraltar for 8 years. He married Anne Leith, daughter of Colonel Alexander Leith at Gibraltar on 28 November 1757. Her father died commanding artillery at the Siege of Havana in 1762. In 1762 Cary became major in the 74th Foot and was put on half-pay from 1763 to 1765. He was major in the 60th Foot in 1765 and was on half pay again from 1768 to 1779.
