Thomas Charlton Whitmore
Thomas Charlton Whitmore (5 January 1807 – 13 March 1865) was an English Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1832 to 1852. Whitmore was the eldest son of Thomas Whitmore of Apley Park and his wife Catherine Thomasson. His father was M.P. for Bridgnorth from 1806 to 1831. Whitmore married Lady Louisa Anne Douglas, daughter of Charles Douglas, 6th Marquess of Queensberry and Lady Caroline Scott, on 11 April 1833. At the 1832 general election Whitmore was elected Member of Parliament for Bridgnorth. He held the seat until 1852. He was High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1863. Linley Halt Railway Station
Linley, later Linley Halt, was a small railway station on the Severn Valley line in Shropshire, England. The station was built as a condition of constructing the railway at the behest of Thomas C. Whitmore of Apley Park estate, through which the railway runs. Apley Hall lies on the opposite bank of the River Severn to the station. Access from the estate to the station was originally by ferry and later via a chain suspension bridge. The single siding accessed by means of a ground frame was taken out of use in December 1957. The siding connected with the running line with a trailing connection in the up direction. The station closed on 9 September 1963 as part of the planned closure of the northern end of the Severn Valley Line which pre-dated the Beeching report. The little altered station building survives as a private residence although the canopy that provided shelter to passengers on the platform has been removed. Severn Valley Railway
The Severn Valley Railway is a heritage railway in Shropshire and Worcestershire, England. The heritage line runs along the Severn Valley from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster, following the course of the River Severn for much of its route, and crossing the river on the historic Victoria Bridge. The railway is the sixth-longest standard gauge heritage line in the United Kingdom. Train services are hauled predominantly by steam locomotives, with vintage diesel locomotives hauling occasionally. Diesel locomotives are also used for engineering trains, to replace failed steam locomotives at short notice, and during periods of high fire risk. The railway hosts numerous special events throughout the year, including both steam and diesel galas. This is a list of sheriffs and high sheriffs of Shropshire The sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly the high sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct so that its functions are now largely ceremonial.
