Thomas Carey (Australian Politician)
Thomas Campbell Carey (1832 or 1833 – 4 September 1884) was the surveyor to whom John and Alexander Forrest were apprenticed, and was later a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Thomas Carey was born in Ireland in 1832–33. Little is known of his youth, but he was employed as a draughtsman commanding the Engineer's Office at Chatham, and later in an Ordnance Survey as Land Agent and Surveyor. In September 1853, he married Eliza Shields Stewart. In 1862, Carey emigrated to Western Australia, where he became an assistant surveyor for the colony's Survey Department. Over the next eight years, Carey was at various times stationed at Albany, Wellington and Bunbury. In November 1863, while stationed at Bunbury, Carey accepted as his apprentice a young John Forrest. Thomas Carey (29 December 1931 – 23 January 2002) was an American operatic baritone. Born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, he served in the United States military during the Korean War. After leaving the service, he studied singing at the Henry Street Settlement and at City College of New York. In 1970, he performed the role of Mel in the world premiere of Michael Tippett's ''The Knot Garden'' at the Royal Opera House in London. He appeared in the second London West End revival of ''Show Boat'' in the role of Joe, which premiered in 1971. From 1969 until his death of pancreatic cancer in Norman, Oklahoma, he taught on the voice faculty of the University of Oklahoma. Thomas Falkland Carey (12 February 1903 – 4 December 1966) was an American-born Irish cricketer and British colonial administrator. Biography Education Carey received his education at The King's Hospital, and later Dublin and Trinity College where he earned his B.A. in 1925. Colonial service In January 1926, Carey began his career as a cadet win the Federated Malay States (FMS). He later became an assistance controller in Malacca, April 1927. Later that year in June, he was transferred to Negeri Sembilan. After a year, he was assigned to Kuala Lumpur, and finally Klang in August 1928. Thomas Carey (1597 - 1634) was a courtier to Charles I of England, Charles I and English people, English Member of Parliament. Life He was born 16 September 1597, the second son of Robert Carey, 1st Earl of Monmouth. He was tutored within his father's household by Henry Burton (theologian), Henry Burton. He became groom of the bedchamber to Charles, then Prince of Wales, in 1616 and retained that post until his death. In 1617 he was sent with John Digby, 1st Earl of Bristol, Sir John Digby to Madrid and subsequently traveled in France and Germany. Thomas Joseph Carey (March 1846 – August 16, 1906), born J. J. Norton, was an American shortstop in Major League Baseball. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Carey joined the 17th New York Volunteer Infantry in September 1863. He claimed to have fought at Bentonville, Jonesboro and Atlanta before being discharged in July 1865. Carey played a total of nine seasons of baseball, five of which were in the National Association ( 1871–1875), and the other four in the National League. During two of the seasons in the National Association, he also spent some time as player-manager, with a career record of 27 wins and 21 losses. Carey played as a second baseman in his first three seasons in the National Association, and went hitless in three at bats for the Fort Wayne Kekiongas in the first professional game ever played on May 4, 1871, against the Cleveland Forest Citys. Nicknamed "Scoops" for his defensive ability, Carey batted and threw right-handed. He was listed as tall and . The native of Hoboken, New Jersey, began his professional baseball career with the Chambersburg Young Yanks of the Blue Ridge League in 1930. He had a batting average of .306 that year, a personal best. He then was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals' organization and toiled in their system for five years, including three with the top-level Rochester Red Wings. Carey reached the majors in with the Cardinals' American League rivals, the St. Louis Browns, spending three years with them before moving to the Boston Red Sox (1939–42; 1946). Carey was a foundation player for Canterbury-Bankstown. Playing career Carey began his first grade career for St George and played 3 seasons for them before switching to Canterbury in 1935 who were the newly admitted team into the competition. Carey played in the club first ever game against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval which finished in a 20–5 loss. Carey is credited as kicking the first goal for the club. Canterbury-Bankstown finished the 1935 season in second last position narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon which was handed to University.
