Thomas C. Wasson
Thomas Campbell Wasson (February 8, 1896 – 23 May 1948) was an American diplomat who was assassinated while serving as the Consul General for the United States in Jerusalem. He was also a member of the United Nations Truce Commission. Biography Wasson was born February 8, 1896, in Great Falls, Montana, and raised in Newark, New Jersey. From 1926 to 1929, he served as the United States Vice Consul in Melbourne, Australia. In 1932, he was Vice Consul in Puerto Cortes, Honduras, and in 1938, became the Consul in Lagos, Nigeria. In April 1948, Wasson was appointed as the Consul General for the US in Jerusalem. On 19 May 1948, ''The Scotsman'' quoted a report by Wasson saying the British Consul had a "narrow escape" when the consulate came under gunfire. Arthur Derounian
Arthur Derounian (born Avedis Boghos Derounian (), (other quote elided) April 9, 1909 – April 23, 1991), also known as John Roy Carlson among many pen names, was an Armenian-American journalist and author, best-selling author of ''Under Cover''. Derounian wrote for the ''Armenian Mirror-Spectator'', ''Fortune Magazine'', the ''Council Against Intolerance'' and the ''Friends of Democracy.'' In the 1950s he founded and managed the Armenian Information Service, which made a number of publications. His exposé writing has been the subject of lawsuits. Derounian is also notable for editing the manifesto of Armenia's first Prime Minister, Hovhannes Kajaznuni. Hadassah Hospital Convoy Massacre
The Hadassah convoy massacre took place on April 13, 1948, when a convoy, escorted by Haganah militia, bringing medical and military supplies and personnel to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus, Jerusalem, was ambushed by Arab forces. Seventy-eight Jewish doctors, nurses, students, patients, faculty members and Haganah fighters, and one British soldier were killed in the attack, including twenty three women. Dozens of unidentified bodies, burned beyond recognition, were buried in a mass grave in the Sanhedria Cemetery. The Jewish Agency claimed that the massacre was a gross violation of international humanitarian law, and demanded action be taken against a breach of the Geneva Conventions. The Arabs claimed they had attacked a military formation, that all members of the convoy had engaged in combat, and that it had been impossible to distinguish combatants from civilians. Bertha Spafford Vester
Horatio Gates Spafford (October 20, 1828, Troy, New York – September 25, 1888, Jerusalem) was a prominent American lawyer and Presbyterian church elder. He is best known for penning the Christian hymn '' It Is Well With My Soul'' following a family tragedy in which his four daughters died aboard the S.S. ''Ville du Havre'' on a transatlantic voyage. Life Spafford was the son of ''Gazetteer'' author Horatio Gates Spafford and Elizabeth Clark Hewitt Spafford. On September 5, 1861, he married Anna Larsen of Stavanger, Norway, in Chicago. Spafford was a lawyer and a senior partner in a large law firm. The Spaffords were supporters and friends of evangelist Dwight L. Moody. Spafford invested in real estate north of Chicago in the spring of 1871. In October 1871, the Great Fire of Chicago reduced the city to ashes, destroying most of Spafford's investment. The American Colony was a colony established in Jerusalem in 1881 by members of a Christian utopian society led by Anna and Horatio Spafford.
