Thomas Brooke (died 1418)
Sir Thomas Brooke (c.1355-1418) of Holditch in the parish of Thorncombe in Devon (since 1844 in Dorset) and of la Brooke in the parish of Ilchester in Somerset, was "by far the largest landowner in Somerset" and served 13 times as a Member of Parliament for Somerset (between 1386 and 1413). He was the first prominent member of his family, largely due to the great wealth he acquired from his marriage to a wealthy widow. The monumental brass of Sir Thomas Brooke and his wife survives in Thorncombe Church. Origins He was the son and heir of Thomas Brooke (d.1367) of Holditch and la Brooke-juxta-Ilchester, by his wife Constance Markensfeld (or Markensfield). Dorset (UK Parliament Constituency)
Dorset was a county constituency covering Dorset in southern England, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs), traditionally known as knights of the shire, to the House of Commons of England from 1290 until 1707, to the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom until 1832. The Great Reform Act increased its representation to three MPs with effect from the 1832 general election, and under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 the constituency was abolished for the 1885 election, and replaced by four single-member divisions: North Dorset, South Dorset, East Dorset and West Dorset. When elections were contested, the bloc vote system was used, but contests were rare. Thomas Brooke Alias Cobham
Thomas Brooke (1533-1578), (''alias'' Cobham) of Wandsworth, Surrey, was an English nobleman, privateer, conspirator, and briefly a member of parliament. A son of George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham (died 1558), lord of the Manor of Cobham, Kent and of Cooling Castle, Kent, and a brother of William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham (1527–1597), Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Brooke was notable mainly for his seafaring activities. As a youth, Brooke was tutored at the University of Orleans by Nicholas Alenus, who found him to be "licentious and idle", avoiding lectures and spending whole days in taverns, playing tennis, and "wandering with lost men". Nothing is known of him from 1550 until February 1554, when he and his family were accused of being connected with the rebellion of their kinsman Sir Thomas Wyatt, and Brooke was one of those sent to the Tower of London. Newton (UK Parliament Constituency)
Newton was a parliamentary borough in the county of Lancashire, in England. It was represented by two Members of Parliament in the House of Commons of the Parliament of England from 1559 to 1706 then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 until its abolition in 1832. In 1885 a county constituency with the same name was created and represented by one Member of Parliament. This seat was abolished in 1983. Parliamentary borough The borough consisted of the parish of Newton-le-Willows in the Makerfield district of South Lancashire. Thomas Brooke, 2nd Viscount Alanbrooke (9 January 1920 – 19 December 1972) was a British peer. He was the son of Field Marshal Alan Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke. From an Ulster Anglo-Irish aristocratic family, Brooke received his education at Wellington College in Berkshire and fought in the Second World War in the Royal Artillery. He was a writer and a water colour artist. Sir Thomas Brooke, 1st Baronet, (31 May 1830 in Honley – 16 July 1908 in Huddersfield) was a British baronet. Son of Thomas Brooke, of Northgate House, Honley, Yorkshire, and his wife Ann, daughter of Joseph Ingham, Brooke was a woollen merchant. He married firstly, in 1854, Eliza (d. 1855), daughter of Enoch Vickerman; their son, Francis Thomas, was born in 1855 and predeceased his father in 1872. He married secondly, in 1860, Amelia (d. 1901), daughter of David Dewar, of Dunfermline, Fife; his third wife was Mary (d. 1938), daughter of James Priestley, J.P., of Bankfield, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, and widow of Rev. Barebone's Parliament
Barebone's Parliament, also known as the Little Parliament, the Nominated Assembly and the Parliament of Saints, came into being on 4 July 1653, and was the last attempt of the English Commonwealth to find a stable political form before the installation of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector. It was an assembly entirely nominated by Oliver Cromwell and the Army's Council of Officers. It acquired its name from the nominee for the City of London, Praise-God Barebone. The Speaker of the House was Francis Rous. The total number of nominees was 140, 129 from England, five from Scotland and six from Ireland (see the list of MPs). After conflict and infighting, on 12 December 1653, the members of the assembly voted to dissolve it. It was preceded by the Rump Parliament and succeeded by the First Protectorate Parliament.
