Thomas Brand (minister)
Thomas Brand (1635–1691) was an English nonconformist minister and divine. Life Brand was the son of the rector of Leaden Roothing, Essex. He was educated at Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, and Merton College, Oxford. There he studied law, and later entered the Temple. An acquaintance with Samuel Annesley led Brand to decide to join the ministry. He entered the family of the Lady Dowager Roberts of Glassenbury, Kent, the education of whose four children he superintended. He caused the whole of his salary to be devoted to charity. He soon preached twice every Sunday, and frequently a third time in the evening, at a place two miles distant. He established weekly lectures at several places, and monthly fasts. On the death of the Rev. Mr. Poyntel of Staplehurst, he left Lady Roberts, went to Staplehurst, and was ordained. Thomas Brand (senior)
Thomas Brand (senior) ( 1717 – 1770), was an English country landowner of The Hoo, Kimpton, Hertfordshire and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1741 to 1770. Brand was the only son of Thomas Brand and his wife Margaret Nicholl, daughter of John Nicholl of Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire and Margaret Marsh, heiress to a property known as Pricklers, in Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire (now known as Greenhill Gardens, East Barnet). He was educated at Eton College (1728) and probably Queens' College, Cambridge (1735). From 1739 to 1741 he undertook the Grand Tour of Europe. Brand was returned unopposed as Member of Parliament for New Shoreham in 1741 on the interest of John Phillipson. In 1747, he was returned as MP for Tavistock by his friend the Duke of Bedford. He became more closely connected with the Duke when he married Lady Caroline Pierrepont, the daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull who was an aunt of the Duke's wife. Thomas Brand Hollis
Thomas Brand Hollis (1719 – 9 September 1804), born Thomas Brand, was a British political radical and dissenter. Early life Thomas Brand was born the only son of Timothy Brand, a mercer of Ingatestone, Essex, and his wife Sarah Michell of Rickling. He was educated at Brentwood School and Felsted School. He attended the University of Glasgow. There he was a friend of Richard Baron: both were nonconformists influenced by Francis Hutcheson. He turned down the chance to study at the Inner Temple in 1741, but did befriend the political philosopher and writer Thomas Hollis through the inns of court. In 1748–9 Brand toured Europe with Hollis,. He made further European travels from 1750 to 1753. In June 1756 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Thomas Brand (17 September 1749 – 21 February 1794) was an English country landowner of Kimpton, Hertfordshire and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1780. Biography Brand was born on 17 September 1749, the eldest son of Thomas Brand of The Hoo, Kimpton, Hertfordshire and his wife Lady Caroline Pierrepont daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull. He was educated at Westminster School in 1764 and was admitted at Trinity College, Cambridge on 19 January 1765. In August 1770 he succeeded his father to The Hoo. He married Gertrude Roper, daughter of Charles Roper on 20 April 1771. Brand's estate extended into Cambridgeshire and he tried to enter Parliament in 1770 at Cambridgeshire in a by-election, but he was dismissed as an outsider, and withdrew before the poll, receiving £1,000 compensation from Sir Sampson Gideon, Bt. Thomas Brand, 20th Baron Dacre
Thomas Brand, 20th Baron Dacre (25 March 1774 – 21 March 1851) was a British peer and Whig politician. Background Dacre was the eldest son of Thomas Brand, of The Hoo, Hertfordshire, and Gertrude, 19th Baroness Dacre, daughter of the Hon. Charles Roper. Military career He raised and commanded the Kimpton Volunteer Rifles, a part-time unit of the Volunteer Corps formed in 1803. In 1808 the volunteers were replaced by the Local Militia, and Brand commanded the Midland Battalion, Hertfordshire Local Militia, based at Hitchin. Political career Dacre entered Parliament for Helston in January 1807, a seat he only held until May of the same year, when he was returned for Hertfordshire. He continued to represent this constituency until 1819, when he succeeded his mother in the barony of Dacre and entered the House of Lords. Brigadier General Thomas Walter Brand, 3rd Viscount Hampden (29 January 1869 – 4 September 1958) was a British peer and soldier, the son of the 2nd Viscount Hampden. Education He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Marriage and family On 29 April 1899, he married Lady Katharine Mary Montagu-Douglas-Scott (a daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch), and they had eight children. Military career Brand served as an officer in the Hertfordshire Regiment, and for 10th Royal Hussars during the Second Boer War in South Africa in 1899. Then was private secretary to Earl Cawdor in 1905; then a brigadier-major in the British Armed Forces from 1908 to 1910. Later he served as commanding officer of the 1st Battalion from February 1913. Thomas Henry Brand, 4th Viscount Hampden CMG (30 March 1900 – 17 October 1965) was a British and English peer, both Baron Dacre (dating from 1307) and Viscount Hampden. The son of Thomas Brand, 3rd Viscount Hampden GCVO, KCB, CMG, and of Lady Katharine Mary Montagu-Douglas-Scott, a daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch, he was educated at Eton, holding the office of Page of Honour to King George V between 1913 and 1916.
