Thomas Bayly (Maryland Politician)
Thomas Bayly (September 13, 1775 – 1829) was a slave owner and U.S. Congressman from the eighth district of Maryland, serving from 1817 to 1823. Born at the ''Wellington'' estate near Quantico, Maryland, Bayly attended private schools and later graduated from Princeton College in 1797. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in Somerset and Worcester Counties, Maryland. Bayly served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1804 to 1814. Thomas Monteagle Bayly
Thomas Monteagle Bayly (March 26, 1775 – January 7, 1834) was an eighteenth and nineteenth century slave owner, politician, lawyer and planter from Virginia. He was the father of Thomas Henry Bayly. Early life Born on Hills Farm near Drummondtown, Virginia, Bayly attended Washington Academy in Maryland as a young man. He went on to graduate from Princeton College in New Jersey in 1794, had studied law. Career Bayly was admitted to the bar around 1796 commencing practice in Accomack County, Virginia. Bayly also engaged in planting. Thomas Haynes Bayly
Thomas Haynes Bayly (13 October 1797 – 22 April 1839) was an English poet, songwriter, dramatist and writer. Life Bayly was born in Bath on 13 October 1797, the only child of Nathaniel Bayly, an influential citizen of Bath: he was related through his mother to the Earls of Stamford and Warrington and the Baroness le Despencer. He displayed a talent for verse from a young age, and in his eighth year was found dramatising a tale out of one of his story-books. He attended Winchester School, where he produced a weekly newspaper which recorded the proceedings of the master and pupils in the school. At the age of 17 he began working at his father's office for the purpose of studying the law, but soon devoted himself to writing humorous articles for the public journals, and produced a small volume entitled ''Rough Sketches of Bath''. Thomas Bayly (died 20 July 1670) was a seventeenth century Anglican bishop in Ireland. Bayly, a native of Rutland was educated at the University of Oxford (he was awarded an Oxford Master of Arts and a Doctor of Divinity ), and became Chaplain to Augustine Lindsell, Bishop of Peterborough, until his appointment as Dean of Down (1661–1663). Thomas Bailey (priest)
Thomas Bailey or Bayly (died c. 1657) was a seventeenth-century English religious controversialist, a Royalist Church of England clergyman who converted to Roman Catholicism. Biography Bailey's father was Lewis Bayly, Bishop of Bangor, and a brother was the scholar and clergyman John Bayly (1595/6–1633). Bailey was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He began as a priest within his father's diocese; in 1634 he became Rector of Holgate, Shropshire, and in 1638 the sub-dean of Wells. He served as a commissioned officer in defence of Raglan Castle in 1646, and was briefly imprisoned in Newgate gaol for writing against the Commonwealth after Charles I was executed in 1649. In that year he also defended Charles against allegations that he had been a Roman Catholic. In ''Certamen Religiosum'' he reported on religious discussions from 1646 between Charles and Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester, at Raglan Castle. Thomas Baily (ca. 1525, Yorkshire - 7 October 1591, Douai) was an English Catholic clergyman during the Elizabethan persecutions. Life Baily was an undergraduate at Clare College, Cambridge, where he graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1546. Soon after he became a Fellow of that house and was promoted to the degree of Master of Arts in 1549. In 1554 he was appointed a Proctor and in the following year he subscribed to the Roman Catholic Articles. About November, 1557, he was appointed Master of Clare College and in 1558 received the further degree of Bachelor of Divinity. In the same year, Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne of England, and efforts were made by the Church of England party at Cambridge to gain recruits to its ranks, but Baily refused to conform to Anglicanism. Thomas Bayly Howell FRS (6 September 1767 – 13 April 1815) was an English lawyer and writer who edited and lent his name to ''Howell's State Trials''. Life Thomas Bayly Howell was born in Jamaica. His family returned to England in 1770 to settle at Prinknash Park near Gloucester. Howell studied at Christ Church, Oxford but did not graduate, instead moving on to Lincoln's Inn and being called to the bar in 1790.Goodwin (2004) In 1808, William Cobbett asked Howell to edit a new edition of the ''State Trials'', a work aspiring to aggregate all the important cases on public law in England. Former compilations of the subject were published by Thomas Salmon, Sollom Emlyn and Francis Hargrave over the previous century. Howell worked on the project from 1809 to 1814, his son, Thomas Jones Howell taking over from him.
