Thomas Alley
Thomas C. Alley (born February 12, 1946) is a Democratic politician from Michigan who served for two decades in the Michigan House of Representatives from the northern part of the state. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Michigan Senate in 1998. A longtime Democratic activist, Alley was chairman of the Ogemaw County Democratic Party from 1974 to 1977, a member of the Michigan Democratic State Central Committee in 1975 and 1976, a delegate to both the 1976 and 1984 Democratic National Conventions, and a worker on the campaigns of Don Riegle for U.S. Senate in 1976, Sander Levin for governor in 1974, and a county coordinator for Attorney General Frank J. Michigan House Of Representatives
The Michigan House of Representatives is the lower house of the Michigan Legislature. There are 110 members, each of whom is elected from constituencies having approximately 77,000 to 91,000 residents, based on population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census. Its composition, powers and duties are established in Article IV of the Michigan Constitution. Members are elected in even-numbered years and take office at 12 p.m. (EST) on January 1 following the November general election. Concurrently with the Michigan Senate, the House first convenes on the second Wednesday in January, according to the state constitution. Each member is limited to serving three terms of two years. 1976 Democratic National Convention
The 1976 Democratic National Convention met at Madison Square Garden in New York City, from July 12 to July 15, 1976. The assembled United States Democratic Party delegates at the convention nominated former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia for president and Senator Walter Mondale of Minnesota for vice president. John Glenn and Barbara Jordan gave the keynote addresses. Jordan's keynote address made her the first African-American woman to deliver the keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. The convention was the first in New York City since the 103-ballot 1924 convention. By the time the convention opened Carter already had more than enough delegates to clinch the nomination, and so the major emphasis at the convention was to create an appearance of party unity, which had been lacking in the 1968 and 1972 Democratic Conventions. Sander Levin
Sander Martin Levin (born September 6, 1931) is an American politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 2019, representing (numbered as the from 1983 to 1993 and as the from 1993 to 2013). Levin, a member of the Democratic Party from Michigan, is a former ranking member on the House Ways and Means Committee; he was Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee from 2010 to 2011. He is the older brother of former U.S. Senator Carl Levin, and the father of current Congressman Andy Levin, his successor. In December 2017, Levin announced that he would retire from Congress at the end of his current term, and not seek re-election in 2018. The 1984 Democratic National Convention was held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California from July 16 to July 19, 1984, to select candidates for the 1984 United States presidential election. The Michigan Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the state of Michigan. It is based in Lansing. Lavora Barnes is the party's current chair. She was previously the party's Chief Operating Officer. The party currently controls half of Michigan's U.S. House seats, both U.S. Senate seats, and all statewide offices, holding the offices of governor, secretary of state, and attorney general. Michigan Senate
The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives, it composes the state legislature, which has powers, roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. The Michigan Senate is composed of 38 members, each elected from a single-member district with a population of between approximately 212,400 to 263,500 residents. Legislative districts are drawn on the basis of population figures, provided by the federal decennial census. Senators' terms begin immediately upon their election. Republicans hold the majority in the State Senate with twenty-two seats; Democrats hold the minority with sixteen seats.
