Thomas Ahearn (Australian Politician)
Thomas Gipps Ahearn (born 6 August 1929) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Ahearn was born at Nanango, Queensland, the son of Leslie Norman Ahearn and his wife Hilda Christina (née Hansen). He was educated at the Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School, the Slade School, Warwick, and Toowoomba Grammar School before going on to the University of Queensland. He was the senior chemistry master at The Southport School in 1949-1950 and in 1957 established the company TH Ahearn and Co which he ran until 1997. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. Queensland Labor Party
The Queensland Labor Party (QLP) was a political party of Queensland, Australia formed in 1957 by a breakaway group of the then ruling Labor Party Government after the expulsion of Premier Vince Gair. In 1962 the party became the Queensland section of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). The party continued to hold seats in the Queensland state parliament until 1972, then suffered a collapse in its vote and wound itself up in 1978. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. 1957 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 3 August 1957 to elect the 75 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The major parties contesting the election were the Queensland Labor Party led by Premier Vince Gair, the Labor Party led by former Deputy Premier Jack Duggan, and the Country-Liberal coalition led by Frank Nicklin. The elections, only 15 months into the parliamentary term, were made necessary by the collapse of the nine-term Labor government. Gair had formed the Queensland Labor Party after being expelled from the Labor Party, and attempted to stay in power as a minority government. Herbert Robinson (Queensland Politician)
Herbert Freemont Robinson (20 May 1893 – 3 June 1969) was an Australian politician, and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1953 until 1957 representing the seat of Sandgate. Early life Robinson was born on 20 May 1893 in Comet, Queensland, to Philip Robinson, a school teacher, and his wife Lucy (née Mann). He was educated at Comet State School and subsequently taught as a pupil-teacher. As a youth he played rugby league for Toowoomba and Ipswich. By 1915, he was working as a railway porter in Toowoomba. He enlisted in the First Australian Imperial Force on 27 August 1915 as a Private, embarking for active service in Egypt on 31 January 1916 aboard T.S. '' Wandilla'' and transferring to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion where he saw service in both Egypt and France. He was wounded in action in May 1917, and was out of the war for much of 1918 due to illness. In April 1919 he joined the AIF Education Service where he worked as a Duty Librarian.
