Thomas A. Giles
Thomas Augustine Giles (November 23, 1916 – October 23, 1970) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Cumberland West in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1949 to 1953. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. Born in 1916 at Victoria, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Giles graduated from St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University, and was a lawyer by career. He married Joan Edwards of Salisbury, England in 1945, and then Sylvia Bowser of Sussex, New Brunswick. Giles entered provincial politics in the 1949 election, defeating Liberal incumbent Kenneth Judson Cochrane by 177 votes in the newly established Cumberland West riding. He was defeated by Liberal Allison T. Kenneth Judson Cochrane
Kenneth Judson Cochrane (4 August 1896 – 25 January 1982) was a shipbuilder, lumber merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Cumberland in the House of Commons of Canada from 1935 to 1940 as a Liberal member and represented Cumberland in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1941 to 1949 as a Liberal. He was born in Fox River, Nova Scotia, the son of George Melville Cochrane and Sarah Soley. He was educated at the Ontario Business College in Belleville. He worked for the Canadian Bank of Commerce and as an engineer for the Nova Scotia Department of Highways. In 1917, he married Gwendolyn E. Kerr. Cochrane also served as a member of the municipal council for Port Greville in 1918. Cumberland County, Nova Scotia
Cumberland County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. History The name Cumberland was applied by Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Monckton to the captured Fort Beauséjour on June 18, 1755 in honour of the third son of King George II, William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, victor at Culloden in 1746 and Commander in Chief of the British forces. The Mi'kmaq name for the area was "Kwesomalegek" meaning "hardwood point". Cumberland County was founded on August 17, 1759. When the Township of Parrsboro was divided in 1840, one part was annexed to Cumberland County and the other part annexed to Colchester. The dividing line between Cumberland and Colchester was established in 1840. In 1897, a portion of the boundary line between the Counties of Colchester and Cumberland was fixed and defined.
