Thom Wainggai
Thomas Wapai Newei Sarampayai Wainggai (also known as Thomas Wainggai, Thom Wainggai or Dr. Thom; 5 December 1937 – 12 March 1996) was an Indonesian scholar, political and cultural leader, philosopher, and nationalist; as well as an advocate of West Papuan self-determination and Melanesian identity. He became one of the first West Papuan to get an advanced education outside of West Papua region. In 1988, he was arrested for his political beliefs and teachings and was sentenced to two decades behind bars. In 1996, he died as a political prisoner in a Jakarta prison. Education Dr. Thom was born and raised in Hollandia (currently Jayapura), then New Guinea part of Dutch East Indies, where he spent his young days. He went to school in the city. Jayapura (formerly Dutch: ''Hollandia'') is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of Papua. It is situated on the northern coast of New Guinea island and covers an area of . Free Papua Movement
"Free Papua Movement" ( id, Organisasi Papua Merdeka, OPM, tpi, Fri Wes Papua Grup) is an umbrella term for the independence movement established during 1965 in the West Papuan or West New Guinea territory which is currently being administrated by Indonesia as the provinces of Papua and West Papua, also formerly known as Papua, Irian Jaya and West Irian. Universal Declaration On Human Rights
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is an international document adopted by the United Nations General Assembly that enshrines the rights and freedoms of all human beings. Drafted by a UN committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, it was accepted by the General Assembly as Resolution 217 during its third session on 10 December 1948 at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France. The Republic of West Papua ( id, Republik Papua Barat) is a proposed state consisting of the Western New Guinea region. Papua (province)
Papua is a province of Indonesia, comprising the northern coast of Western New Guinea together with island groups in Cenderawasih Bay to the west. It roughly follows the borders of Papuan customary region of Tabi Saireri. It is bordered by the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the north, Cenderawasih Bay to the west, and the provinces of Central Papua and Highland Papua to the south. Mandala Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia. Founded in 1950 as Dock V Field, It is currently used mostly for football matches. It is the home stadium of one of the biggest and successful Liga 1 Indonesia team, Persipura Jayapura. The stadium holds 30,000 people and is the largest stadium in eastern Indonesia until Lukas Enembe Stadium was opened in 2019. West Melanesia Flag
West or Occident is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from east and is the direction in which the Sun sets on the Earth. Morning Star Flag
The Morning Star flag ( id, Bendera Bintang Kejora, nl, Morgenstervlag) was a flag used in a supplemental fashion on Netherlands New Guinea to the flag of the Netherlands. It was first raised on 1 December 1961 prior to the territory coming under administration of the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA) on 1 October 1962. The flag is used by the Free Papua Organization and other independence supporters. Under Papua's ''Special Autonomy Law'', ratified in 2002, the flag may be raised in Western New Guinea (West Papua) region so long as the flag of Indonesia is also raised and it is higher than the Morning Star flag. New York Agreement
The New York Agreement is an agreement signed by the Netherlands and Indonesia regarding the administration of the territory of Western New Guinea. The first part of the agreement proposes that the United Nations assume administration of the territory, and a second part proposes a set of social conditions that will be provided if the United Nations exercises a discretion proposed in article 12 of the agreement to allow Indonesian occupation and administration of the territory. Negotiated during meetings hosted by the United States, the agreement was signed on 15 August 1962 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, United States.
