''This Is Madness'' is the second studio album by spoken word recording artists The Last Poets. It was released in 1971 through Douglas Records. Recording sessions took place at Mediasound Studios with production by Alan Douglas and Stefan Bright. The album peaked at #104 on the ''Billboard'' 200 albums chart and at #14 on the Top R&B Albums chart in the United States. It spawned two singles, "O.D." and "True Blues". The songs from ''This Is Madness'' were used by various hip hop musicians. Umar Bin Hassan
Umar Bin Hassan (born Gilbert Jerome Huling in Akron, Ohio, 1948) is an American poet and recording artist, associated with The Last Poets. He sold his younger sister's record player to purchase a bus ticket to New York City, where he joined the Last Poets. In the mid-1990s, he recorded a solo album titled '' Be Bop or Be Dead'' on Bill Laswell's Axiom Records through Island/ PolyGram. In 1994, Bin Hassan appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, '' Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool'', appearing on a track titled "This is Madness" alongside Abiodun Oyewole and Pharoah Sanders. The album was named "Album of the Year" by ''Time'' magazine. Bin Hassan appeared on the 2013 Dead Prez album, ''Information Age'' (Deluxe Edition). Abdul Mati Klarwein (April 9, 1932 – March 7, 2002) was a French painter of German origin best known for his works used on the covers of music albums. Personal life Mati Klarwein was born in Hamburg, Germany. His mother Elsa Kühne was an opera singer and his father Joseph Klarwein was a Brick Expressionist architect and later with the Bauhaus movement. His family was of Jewish origin and they fled to the British Mandate of Palestine when he was two years old, after the rise of Nazi Germany. In 1948, the family fled to Paris when Israel its declared independence and Arab nations invaded the country.
