This'll Make You Whistle (musical)
''This'll Make You Whistle'' is a British musical with a book by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson and music and lyrics by Maurice Sigler, Al Goodhart and Al Hoffman. It premiered at the Kings Theatre, Southsea before beginning a 190 performance run in the West End lasting from 15 September 1936 until 27 February 1937, originally at the Palace Theatre before transferring to Daly's Theatre. The show was created as a vehicle for the entertainer Jack Buchanan. The original London cast also included Jean Gillie, Elsie Randolph, William Kendall, David Hutcheson and Gordon Craig. Buchanan produced the show himself, in conjunction with C.B. Cochran. The sets were designed by the art director Clifford Pember. Guy Bolton
Guy Reginald Bolton (23 November 1884 – 4 September 1979) was an Anglo-American playwright and writer of musical comedies. Born in England and educated in France and the US, he trained as an architect but turned to writing. Bolton preferred working in collaboration with others, principally the English writers P. G. Wodehouse and Fred Thompson, with whom he wrote 21 and 14 shows respectively, and the American playwright George Middleton, with whom he wrote ten shows. Among his other collaborators in Britain were George Grossmith Jr., Ian Hay and Weston and Lee. In the US, he worked with George and Ira Gershwin, Kalmar and Ruby and Oscar Hammerstein II. Bolton is best known for his early work on the Princess Theatre musicals during the First World War with Wodehouse and the composer Jerome Kern. Elsie Randolph
Elsie Randolph (9 December 1904 – 15 October 1982) was an English actress, singer and dancer. Randolph was born and died in London. She is best remembered for her partnership with Jack Buchanan in several stage and film musicals. She also appeared in two of Alfred Hitchcock's British films, made 40 years apart. One of her final roles was a guest part in the 1981 television series '' Funny Man'' set in the music halls of the late 1920s. Her papers are in the collection of the University of Birmingham that also has performance details in its collection. Elstree Studios on Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire is a British film and television production centre operated by Elstree Film Studios Limited. One of several facilities historically referred to as Elstree Studios, the Shenley Road studios originally opened in 1925. Herbert Sydney Wilcox Order of the British Empire, CBE (19 April 1890 – 15 May 1977) was a British film producer and film director, director. He was one of the most successful British filmmakers from the 1920s to the 1950s. He is best known for the films he made with his third wife Anna Neagle. ''This'll Make You Whistle'' is a 1936 British musical comedy film directed by Herbert Wilcox and starring Jack Buchanan, Elsie Randolph and William Kendall. The film was based on the stage musical of the same title which Buchanan had starred in. Synopsis A man-about-town accidentally finds himself engaged to two women at the same time, the horse-mad Laura and the sweet-natured Joan who is dominated by her disapproving mother. His attempts to convince the guardian of the former that he is completely unsuited to marriage, while trying to persuade the mother of the latter that he is, are further complicated by the behaviour of his two friends and the appearance of an attractive life model named Bobbie Rivers. Clifford Pember
Clifford Fanshawe Pember (1881–1955) was a British art director notable for his set designs in British cinema and theatre. Pember worked on films during the late silent and early sound eras. Pember originally trained as an architect. In 1928 he designed the sets for Alfred Hitchcock's film '' Easy Virtue'', adapted from the play by Noël Coward. Along with Walter Murton, Pember has been identified as belonging to the "old school" of British set designers who resisted changes brought by new modernist influences (particularly by German immigrants). David Hutcheson
David Hutcheson (14 June 1905 – 18 February 1976) was a British character actor. He made his film debut in ''Fast and Loose'' in 1930 and played his only lead role in 1934's '' Romance in Rhythm''. He went on to specialise in hooray henrys, silly asses and military types most prominently in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's ''The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp'' (1943) and Peter Ustinov's ''School for Secrets'' (1946) and ''Vice Versa'' (1948). He continued in film and television until the 1970s. During the 1960s he often played the role of Colonel Pickering in stage productions of ''My Fair Lady.'' On 25 March 1949 he married Mary, Countess of Warwick, (née Mary Kathleen Hopkinson), the former wife of Charles Greville, 7th Earl of Warwick.
