The Cry Of The Icemark
''The Cry of the Icemark'' is the first book in the Icemark Chronicles by English author Stuart Hill. The plot revolves around thirteen-year-old princess Thirrin Freer Strong-in-the-Arm Lindenshield, as she must fight to save her small home, the Icemark, from the invading Polypontian Empire. The novel won the inaugural Waterstones Children's Book Prize in 2005. It also won the 2006 Highlands Children's Book award for Long Novels in 2006. Fox has bought the rights to the movie. However, no release dates or production information exist. Plot The Polypontian Empire has conquered much of the known world in recent years, much thanks to its fearsome general, Scipio Bellorum. Medea Clytemnestra Strong-In-The-Arm Lindenshield is a fictional character and the chief antagonist from Stuart Hill's fantasy trilogy of books called ''The Icemark Chronicles''. She appears in a major role in both ''Blade of Fire'' and ''Last Battle of the Icemark''. She does not appear in ''The Cry of the Icemark'' as it is set 20 years previously to the other novels. Plot Overview Medea is the second youngest child (youngest daughter) of Queen Thirrin and Oskan Witchfather. Her full name is Medea Clytemnestra Strong-In-The-Arm Lindenshield. She is 15 years old. She has an elder sister, Crown Princess Cressida (17), a pair of elder twin brothers, Cerdic and Eodred (16) and a younger brother, Charlemagne (14). ''Blade of Fire'' is the second novel in Stuart Hill's fantasy series, the Icemark Chronicles. Plot ''Blade of Fire'' takes place 20 years after the first novel. The story follows Thirrin's and Oskan's (now married) new efforts to repel the imposing threat of Imperial invasion, yet again at the hands of Scipio Bellorum and his bloodthirsty sons, Octavius and Sulla. But this time, they have the help of their five children: Cressida, the Crown Princess and military extraordinaire; Eodred and Cerdic, the twin warrior princes; Charlemagne (Sharley), stricken with polio at a young age, and much to his chagrin, cannot be a warrior; and finally Medea, the dark daughter and the only inheritor to her father's gift. Housecarl
A housecarl ( on, húskarl; oe, huscarl) was a non-servile manservant or household bodyguard in medieval Northern Europe. The institution originated amongst the Norsemen of Scandinavia, and was brought to Anglo-Saxon England by the Danish conquest in the 11th century. They were well-trained, and paid as full-time soldiers. In England, the royal housecarls had a number of roles, both military and administrative, and they fought under Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings. Etymology Housecarl is a calque of the original Old Norse term, ''húskarl'', which literally means "house man". ''Karl'' is cognate to the Old English ''churl'', or ''ceorl'', meaning a man, or a non-servile peasant. The ''Anglo-Saxon Chronicle'' uses ''hiredmenn'' as a term for all paid warriors and thus is applied to ''housecarl'', but it also refers to ''butsecarls'' and ''lithsmen''. Stuart Hill (author)
Stuart Hill (born 1958) is a British author. He was born in Leicester, where he still lives. He has written four books in The Icemark Chronicles: ''The Cry of the Icemark'', ''Blade of Fire'', ''Last Battle of the Icemark'' and ''Prince Of The Icemark''. He studied English, Classics and Ancient History at Newcastle University. Biography Hill left school at the age of 16 without any formal qualifications. He worked at a car factory for six years before going back to college to get his teaching degree. After teaching English in Greece for several years, he then worked as a book seller in Leicester from 1994 - 2004. Stuart then began writing the Icemark series and when his book was accepted for publication by Chicken House, he dedicated his time to writing the rest of the series. In 2005, ''The Cry of the Icemark'', the first book in the series, was published and copyrighted. On 25 July 2011, Hill released a new book on Kindle. The Federation of Children's Book Groups Children's Book Award is a set of annual literary prizes for children's books published in the U.K. during the preceding calendar year. Yule
Yule, actually Yuletide ("Yule time") is a festival observed by the historical Germanic peoples, later undergoing Christianised reformulation resulting in the now better-known Christmastide. The earliest references to Yule are by way of indigenous Germanic month names ' (Before Yule) or ' and ' (After Yule). Scholars have connected the celebration to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin and the pagan Anglo-Saxon Mōdraniht. Vampires
A vampire is a mythical creature that subsists by feeding on the vital essence (generally in the form of blood) of the living.
