The Third Sarpy County Courthouse is a historic building in Papillion, Nebraska, and the former courthouse of Sarpy County Sarpy County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 190,604, making it the third-most populous county in Nebraska. Its county seat is Papillion. Sarpy County is part of the .... It was built by John L. Soderberg in 1922–1923, and designed in the Classical Revival style by architect William F. Gernandt. With Two other courthouses had been built for the county prior to this one: the first one was the Fontenelle Bank in Bellevue, followed by a second one in Papillion. A fourth courthouse replaced this building in 1974, and it became a city hall and public library. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since July 5, 1990. Papillion is a city in Sarpy County in the state of Nebraska, United States. Designated as the county seat, it developed as an 1870s railroad town and suburb of Omaha. The city is part of the larger five-county metro area of Omaha. Papillion's population was 24,159 at the 2020 census. Its growth since the late 20th century has reflected Omaha's. Overview The city was named after the creek of the same name which flows through its center; this had been named by early French explorers, as France had claimed this territory through the eighteenth century. The name Papillion is derived from the French term (''papillon'') for butterfly. According to local tradition, the early French explorers named the creek as ''Papillon'' because they saw so many butterflies along its grassy banks. Sarpy County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 190,604, making it the third-most populous county in Nebraska. Its county seat is Papillion. Sarpy County is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE- IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. History This was part of the territory of the Omaha people. Explored in 1805 by the Lewis and Clark expedition following the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 by the United States, this area was settled by European-American fur traders, adventurers, farmers, and finally entrepreneurs. All initially depended on the Missouri River as a main transportation corridor and source of water. Sarpy County has served as the springboard for Nebraska's settlement and expansion. The county is named for Colonel Peter Sarpy, an early fur trader at Fontenelle's Post in the Bellevue area in the 1840s. Fontenelle Bank
The Fontenelle Bank is a historic building in Bellevue, Nebraska. It was built with bricks in 1856, and the facade was designed in the Greek Revival style, with pilasters, and the Italianate style, with "the elaborate window caps and the elongation of the wall openings." With It housed the Fontenelle Bank in 1856–1857, and it was the first Sarpy County Courthouse from 1861 to 1875, followed by Bellevue's town hall until 1959.
