Thijmen Koopmans
Thijmen (Tim) Koopmans (11 August 1929 – 24 December 2015) was a Dutch judge and prominent academic. He was a judge of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands and the European Court of Justice. Biography Koopmans was born on 11 August 1929 in Amsterdam.Family notices in '' NRC Handelsblad'', 29 December 2015. In 1953 he earned a Doctor of Law degree at the University of Amsterdam. He then pursued a career as advocate and procurator in Haarlem. In 1956 he started at the Ministry of Justice of the Netherlands, he stayed there until 1962. He made his first move into European law when he joined the legal department of the Council of the European Communities, he stayed there until 1965. He returned to the Netherlands where he became a full professor at Leiden University, working in that position between 1965 and 1978. Supreme Court Of The Netherlands
The Supreme Court of the Netherlands ( nl, Hoge Raad der Nederlanden or simply ''Hoge Raad''), officially the High Council of the Netherlands, is the final court of appeal in civil, criminal and tax cases in the Netherlands, including Curaçao, Sint Maarten and Aruba. The Court was established on 1 October 1838 and is located in The Hague. The Supreme Court rules civil and criminal matters. In certain administrative cases it has final jurisdiction as well, while in other cases this jurisdiction rests with the adjudicative division of the Council of State (''Raad van State''), the Central Appeals Tribunal ('), the Trade and Industry Appeals Tribunal (') as well as judicial institutions in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. The European Court of Justice (ECJ, french: Cour de Justice européenne), formally just the Court of Justice, is the supreme court of the European Union in matters of European Union law. As a part of the Court of Justice of the European Union, it is tasked with interpreting EU law and ensuring its uniform application across all EU member states under Article 263 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). The Court was established in 1952, and is based in Luxembourg. It is composed of one judge per member state – currently – although it normally hears cases in panels of three, five or fifteen judges.
