Theux (; wa, Teu) is a municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Liège, Belgium. On 1 January 2006 the municipality had 11,571 inhabitants. The total area is 83.36 km², giving a population density of 139 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists of the following districts: La Reid, Polleur, and Theux (including the hamlet of Tancrémont). History In World War II, the 75th Division of the U.S. Army, 575th Signal Co., maintained its command post in the town from January 10–12, 1945, as it counterattacked against the German army in the Battle of the Bulge. Franchimont Castle
Franchimont Castle (french: Château de Franchimont) is a medieval castle in the municipality of Theux, Liège Province, Wallonia, Belgium. It sits at the western end of a small hill south of the village of Theux, a sub-municipality. History It is thought to have originally been built in the 11th century, as a stronghold of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The original building was extended several times during the Middle Ages, once after a fire in 1387. In 1487 the castle was besieged, and around the same period the La Marck family took ownership of it. In the early 16th century the outer wall was built, with casemates and an artillery tower added. The prince-bishops of Liège took the title of Marquis of Franchimont at the start of the 16th century, with Franchimont Castle serving as the base of the Marquessate of Franchimont. Perron (columnar Monument)
A perron (in French; also nl, perroen) is kind of stone column, often decorated with a cross-bearing orb (''globus cruciger'') common to many towns and cities belonging to the erstwhile Prince-Bishopric of Liège (980-1795) in modern-day Belgium. They were primarily built in the so-called Good Cities (''Bonnes Villes'' or ''Goede Steden'') that formed the primary urban settlements in the polity. Many survive, although not in their original form. Perrons were also built in the smaller Principality of Stavelot-Malmedy. The columns came to symbolise civic freedom and autonomy (initially bishopric autonomy, later urban autonomy). Tancrémont is a hamlet of Wallonia split between the municipalities of Pepinster and Theux, located in the province of Liège, Belgium. The north side of 666 National Road that crosses the hamlet is part of the municipality of Pepinster. Cuisine Tancrémont is known for the quality of its large cakes called "''roues de charrette''" (cartwheels, with a diameter of about ) and particularly for the rice cakes.
