''There and Back Again'' was the first album by Vertical Horizon, released independently in 1992, and later re-released in 1999 by RCA Records. At the time, the band consisted solely of Matthew Scannell and Keith Kane, who together did all the writing, singing, and producing for the album, as well as playing all instruments used (mostly acoustic guitar, with little percussion and bass). The name was taken from the subtitle of ''The Hobbit'' by J.R.R. Tolkien. Vertical Horizon is an American alternative rock band, formed in Washington, D.C. Vocalists and guitarists Matt Scannell and Keith Kane started the band in 1991 when they were students at Georgetown University. The band have undergone multiple line-up changes since their formation, with Scannell overseeing every iteration as the band's leader. Matthew B. Scannell (born February 10, 1970) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. Scannell is the lead vocalist, lead guitarist, primary songwriter, and founding member of the alternative rock band Vertical Horizon. Background Scannell is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts. He was given his first guitar when he was seven years old. Scannell attended high school at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He enrolled at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. after graduation from high school. Vertical Horizon In 1990, Scannell and another Georgetown student, Keith Kane, formed Vertical Horizon.
