Theosophical Society Adyar
The Theosophy Society was founded by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and others in 1875. The designation 'Adyar' is sometimes added to the name to make it clear that this is the Theosophical Society headquartered there, after the American section and some other lodges separated from it in 1895, under William Quan Judge. In 1882, its headquarters moved with Blavatsky and president Henry Steel Olcott from New York to Adyar, an area of Chennai, India. The US National Section of this organization is called the Theosophical Society in America located in Wheaton, Illinois. Founders H. P. Blavatsky, Henry Steel Olcott, William Quan Judge and others founded the Theosophical Society on 17 November 1875 in New York City. The American section split off with William Quan Judge as its leader. Henry Steel Olcott remained president until his death in 1907. Universal Brotherhood
Theosophy is a religion established in the United States during the late 19th century. It was founded primarily by the Russian Helena Blavatsky and draws its teachings predominantly from Blavatsky's writings. Categorized by scholars of religion as both a new religious movement and as part of the occultist stream of Western esotericism, it draws upon both older European philosophies such as Neoplatonism and Asian religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. As presented by Blavatsky, Theosophy teaches that there is an ancient and secretive brotherhood of spiritual adepts known as the Masters, who—although found around the world—are centered in Tibet. These Masters are alleged by Blavatsky to have cultivated great wisdom and supernatural powers, and Theosophists believe that it was they who initiated the modern Theosophical movement through disseminating their teachings via Blavatsky. Olcott Memorial High School
Olcott Memorial High School is a secondary school located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is a free school providing free education, school uniforms, educational materials and nutritious meals to about 500 underprivileged boys and girls. History The school was started in 1894 by Colonel Olcott with the intention to provide educational upliftment of Paraiyar children. It was the first Paraiyar school in the city. After the demise of Olcott in 1907, the school was renamed as Olcott Memorial Panchama (Paraiyar) School. Tim Boyd
Timothy Breck Boyd (born October 22, 1953) is a theosophist religious leader who was elected the president of the Theosophical Society Adyar in 2014. He succeeded Radha Burnier, who had been president of the Theosophical Society Adyar from 1980 until her death in 2013. Early life Boyd was born in New York City and lived there for seventeen years until he went away to college at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. From Brown University he transferred to the University of Chicago, where he was an honors graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Affairs. Career On October 5, 1974 he joined the Theosophical Society in America. Together with Bill Lawrence, a TS member, and others he founded a Theosophical spiritual community in Chicago's inner city. Radha Burnier
Radha Burnier (; 15 November 1923 – 31 October 2013) was born in Adyar, India. She was president of the Theosophical Society Adyar from 1980 until her death in 2013. She was General Secretary of the Indian Section of the Society between 1960 and 1978, and was previously an actress in Indian films and Jean Renoir's '' The River''. Biography Radha Burnier was the daughter of Nilakanta Sri Ram (who was the fifth President of the T.S. Adyar as well) and Srimati Bhagirathi. Shrimati Radha was educated in Theosophical schools and was a student in Rukmini Devi Arundale's school of classical Indian dance (the Kalakshetra Foundation). She attended the Benares Hindu University from which she obtained a B.A. with distinction and an M.A. on Sanskrit, standing first in that University. Nilakanta Sri Ram or Nilakantha Sri Ram (N. Sri Ram) (* 15 December 1889 in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India; died 8 April 1973 in Adyar, India) was a freemason, theosophist and president of the Theosophical Society Adyar during twenty years. Biography In his early years, Sri Ram worked under Annie Besant in various capacities.
