Theodoros Degiannis
Theodoros Degiannis ( el, Θεόδωρος Ντεγιάννης, 1926–2006) was a Greek admiral and chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff. He also served as the Minister of National Defence in the Caretaker Cabinet of Ioannis Grivas and in the Ecumenical Cabinet of Xenophon Zolotas. He was born in 1926 in Chalcis, Euboea. In 1948 he graduated from the Hellenic Naval Academy and later continued his studies in other academies, including taking the Senior Officers' War Course at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. During the Greek military junta of 1967–74, he was opposed to the regime, like many Navy officers. In 1977 he was promoted to vice admiral. In January 1982 he was appointed as chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff by the government of Andreas Papandreou, as he was one of the officers considered most trustworthy by the newly elected government of PASOK. Hellenic National Defence General Staff
The Hellenic National Defence General Staff ( el, Γενικό Επιτελείο Εθνικής Άμυνας, abbr. ΓΕΕΘΑ) is the senior staff of the Hellenic Armed Forces. It was established in 1950, when the separate armed services ministries were consolidated into the Ministry of National Defence. Its role in peacetime was as a coordinating and senior consultative body at the disposal of the Greek government, and in wartime as the overall headquarters of the Armed Forces. In recent years, through ongoing efforts at increased inter-services cooperation and integration, the HNDGS has assumed peacetime operational control over the separate branches. Between 19 December 1968 and 10 August 1977, the HNDGS was abolished, and the Armed Forces Headquarters ( el, Αρχηγείο Ενόπλων Δυνάμεων, abbr. el, ΑΕΔ) established in its place. Tzannis Tzannetakis
Tzannis Tzannetakis ( el, Τζαννής Τζαννετάκης) (13 September 1927 – 1 April 2010) was a Greek politician who was briefly Prime Minister of Greece during the political crisis of 1989. Biography Tzannetakis was born in Gytheio in the region of Mani in 1927. He served as a military officer but resigned on 22 April 1967, the day after the military coup d'état which brought the dictatorship of Georgios Papadopoulos to power. He was imprisoned by the military junta from 1969 to 1971 for his resistance activity. When democracy was restored in 1974, Tzannetakis joined the New Democracy party of Constantine Karamanlis. From 1974 to 1977 he served as General Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism. He was elected to the Greek Parliament in 1977 and served as Minister for Public Works in the government of Georgios Rallis (1980–81). Agamemnon Gratsios
Agamemnon Gratzios or Gratsios ( el, Αγαμέμνων Γκράτσιος/Γκράτζιος, 1922 – 11 August 1993) was a Hellenic Army officer who rose to the rank of full General, and held the posts of Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff and of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff. He was born in the village of Elafotopos, Zagori in the Ioannina Prefecture, in 1922. He entered the Hellenic Military Academy, but the outbreak of the Greco-Italian War on 28 October 1940 interrupted his studies; along with his classmates, he participated in the Battle of Crete, where he was seriously wounded. In 1942 he was named a second lieutenant. During the Greek Civil War, he served as a platoon, company and battery commander, being promoted to lieutenant (1946) and captain (1948). He was again wounded during the Battle of Naousa in April 1949.
