Theodore Schempp
Theodore William Schempp (1904–1988) was an American artist and art dealer. He dealt in pre-Columbian art, and modernist works. He sold to other dealers, institutions and collectors, and collected art in his own right. Early life He was the second son of William Frederick Schempp and his wife Della Karstetter of Brodhead, Wisconsin, born February 10, 1904. His father edited the local newspaper there; and died in 1929. Schempp attended Brodhead High School, and went on to Oberlin College, where he studied the piano. He graduated B.A. in 1926. He took the Conservatory music course there, to 1927, for the Mus.B. degree. He then moved to Paris, continuing his piano studies under Alfred Cortot. He also painted. Pre-Columbian Art
Pre-Columbian art refers to the visual arts of indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, North, Central, and South Americas from at least 13,000 BCE to the European conquests starting in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The Pre-Columbian era continued for a time after these in many places, or had a transitional phase afterwards. Many types of perishable artifacts that were no doubt once very common, such as woven textiles, typically have not been preserved, but Precolumbian monumental sculpture, metalwork in gold, pottery, and painting on ceramics, walls, and rocks have survived more frequently. The first Pre-Columbian art to be widely known in modern times was that of the empires flourishing at the time of European conquest, the Inca and Aztec, some of which was taken back to Europe intact. Herron Museum
Herron School of Art and Design, officially IU Herron School of Art and Design, is a public art school at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is a professional art school and has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design since 1952. The art school was founded in 1902 as the John Herron Art Institute, operating as an independent institution until its acquisition by Indiana University in 1967. Palm Springs (Cahuilla: ''Séc-he'') is a desert resort city in Riverside County, California, United States, within the Colorado Desert's Coachella Valley. Claude Garache
Claude Garache (born 1929 or 1930) is a French artist. He has worked in painting, sculpture, illustration and engraving. His principal subject is the female nude. Much of his work uses a single colour on a monochrome background, very often blood-red on white. Biography Garache was born in Paris on 20 January 1929 or 1930. Between 1949 and 1959 he studied sculpture and drawing under the sculptor Robert Coutin. He spent time in the studios of Andre Lhote and Fernand Léger, and also visited Alberto Giacometti and worked in the sculpture studio of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.. He travelled frequently in the 1950s, in Europe and to the Middle East and the United States. In 1955 he worked as an artistic advisor to Vincente Minnelli during the filming of '' Lust for Life'', his biography of Vincent van Gogh. Nicolas de Staël (; January 5, 1914 – March 16, 1955) was a French painter of Russian origin known for his use of a thick impasto and his highly abstract landscape painting. Earl L. Stendahl (December 11, 1888 – May 18, 1966) was a pioneering American art dealer known for promoting California Impressionism, modern and pre-Columbian art. The gallery he founded celebrated its centennial in 2011. Early life Stendahl was born in Menomonie, Wisconsin. His parents were confectioners. Career Stendahl moved to the Los Angeles area, where he opened his own candy store. He opened his first gallery in Pasadena, California, in 1913. By 1921, he moved his gallery to the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. He maintained a gallery on Wilshire Boulevard until 1949, where he moved it to his house on Hillside Avenue. Stendahl's son, Alfred E. Stendahl and son-in-law, Joseph Dammann, joined the family business. By the 1930s, the gallerist had established his reputation as the premier dealer in painters of the California Impressionist School.
