Theodor Wachtel
Theodor Wachtel (10 March 1823 – 14 November 1893) was a German tenor. Life Born in Hamburg, Wachtel, born the son of a hackney carriage owner, was himself a haulage contractor after his father's death until his voice, a beautiful and powerful lyrical tenor, was discovered. His first teacher was Julie Grandjean in Hamburg. The twenty-six-year-old made his first attempt on the stage at the municipal theatre of his hometown; shortly before that, on 1 March 1849, he had already attracted the attention of the general public in a concert he had organised himself, in which his fellow countryman Johannes Brahms also took part. As a beginner, Wachtel first worked at the court theatre in Schwerin for one year, then he turned to Würzburg, where he was encouraged by the lessons of the Kapellmeister Witt and the singer Frieda Beck-Weichselbaum. ''Großes Sängerlexikon'' (''Biographical Dictionary of Singers'', literally: Large singers' lexicon) is a single-field dictionary of singers in classical music, edited by Karl-Josef Kutsch and Leo Riemens and first published in 1987. The first edition was in two volumes and contained the biographies of nearly 7000 singers from the 1590s through the 1980s. It grew out of ''Unvergängliche Stimmen. Kleines Sängerlexikon'' (Immortal voices. Small singers' lexicon), published in 1962, which covered only singers who had made recordings. Tutzing
Tutzing is a municipality in the district of Starnberg in Bavaria, Germany, on the west bank of the Starnberger See. Just 40 km south-west of Munich and with good views of the Alps, the town was traditionally a favorite vacation spot for those living in the city. In 1873 Johannes Brahms spent four summer months in Tutzing, completing his String Quartets Opus 51 and writing the Haydn Variations. A small lakeside park is dedicated to him, and a plaque stands near the large house where he lived and worked. The town of 10,000 is home to many commuters to Munich, as well as to retirees. Joseph Michael Jahn (born August 4, 1943) is an American journalist, author and memoirist. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Sayville, New York. He moved to New York City in 1966 and was educated at Dowling College, Adelphi University, and Columbia University. The Mecklenburg State Theatre (german: Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin) is the principal theatre of Schwerin in Germany. A tenor is a type of classical music, classical male singing human voice, voice whose vocal range lies between the countertenor and baritone voice types. It is the highest male chest voice type. The tenor's vocal range extends up to C5. The low extreme for tenors is widely defined to be B2, though some roles include an A2 (two As below middle C). At the highest extreme, some tenors can sing up to the second F above middle C (F5). Tannhäuser (opera)
''Tannhäuser'' (; full title , "Tannhäuser and the Minnesängers' Contest at Wartburg") is an 1845 opera in three acts, with music and text by Richard Wagner ( WWV 70 in the catalogue of the composer's works). It is based on two German legends: Tannhäuser, the mythologized medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. The story centres on the struggle between sacred and profane love, as well as redemption through love, a theme running through most of Wagner's work. The opera remains a staple of major opera house repertoire in the 21st century.
