''Them'' is the first studio album by American hip hop duo Themselves. It was originally released under the name ''Them'' on Anticon in 2000. In 2003, it was re-released under the name ''Themselves''. Critical reception Thomas Quinlan of ''Exclaim!'' gave the album a favorable review, calling it "a classic hip-hop album that is destined to forever burst the boundaries of what should be considered hip-hop." Ali Maloney of '' The Skinny'' said, "Despite the seemingly simple beats and raps configuration, there is no shortage of jaw-dropping pyrotechnics and originality on show here." Anticon
Anticon (often styled as anticon.) is an independent record label based in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 1998 by seven musicians and manager Baillie Parker. It is now collectively owned among six musicians, co-founder Parker, and manager Shaun Koplow. The original musicians signed to Anticon were once referred to as the Anticon collective. History The label's roster of artists has been described as "the hip-hop equivalent of post-rock" and "avant-garde hip-hop". Alternative Hip Hop
Alternative hip hop (also known as alternative rap) is a subgenre of hip hop music that encompasses a wide range of styles that are not typically identified as mainstream. AllMusic defines it as comprising " hip hop groups that refuse to conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, bass, hardcore, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres drawing equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul, reggae, and even folk." Alternative hip hop developed in the late 1980s and experienced a degree of mainstream recognition during the early-to-mid 1990s. While some groups such as Arrested Development and The Fugees managed to achieve commercial success before breaking up, many alternative rap acts tend to be embraced by alternative rock listeners other than hip-hop or pop audiences. Jeffrey James Logan (born May 7, 1978), better known by his stage name Jel, is an American hip hop producer and rapper. He is co-founder of the record label Anticon. He has been a member of Presage, Themselves, Subtle, and 13 & God. Biography Jel released his first solo album, '' 10 Seconds'', on Mush Records in 2002. The album is titled after the limited sampling time of E-mu SP-1200. It features contributions from Dax Pierson, Odd Nosdam, Doseone, and Alias. His second solo album, ''Soft Money'', was released on Anticon in 2006. The album features contributions from Dosh, Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers, and Stefanie Böhm of Ms. John Soda, among others. He released his third solo album, ''Late Pass'', on Anticon in 2013. Style and influences Jel is primarily a producer. The No Music
''The No Music'' (stylized as ''The No Music.'') is the second studio album by American hip hop duo Themselves. It was released on Anticon in 2002. It peaked at number 183 on the CMJ Radio 200 chart, as well as number 13 on CMJ's Hip-Hop chart. A remix version of the album, ''The No Music of AIFFs'', was released in 2003. Critical reception Ed Howard of ''Stylus Magazine'' gave the album a grade of B+, saying, "It's far from perfect, and there are still moments where the experiments fall short, but overall this represents the fulfillment of the substantial promise made by ''Circle'' and ''cLOUDDEAD''". Daniel Thomas-Glass of ''Dusted Magazine'' called it "a masterful piece of work". James Brandon Best, better known by his stage name Pedestrian, is a rapper and writer from Los Angeles. He is a co-founder of Anticon. He is also known as a preacher under the moniker Evangelist J.B. Best. History In 1998, Pedestian co-founded Anticon with other indie hip hop artists. He came up with the name; it means "anti conformity" originally, but also means "ant icon." He has written several articles about hip hop for ''East Bay Express'' from 2003 to 2004. James Timothy "Tim" Holland Jr. (born September 25, 1977), better known by his stage name Sole, is an American underground hip hop artist from Portland, Maine. He is one of eight co-founders of the record label Anticon. He has been a member of the groups Northern Exposure, Live Poets, Deep Puddle Dynamics, So-Called Artists, Da Babylonianz, Sole and the Skyrider Band and Waco Boyz. Career Sole recorded his first demo in 1992. At age 15, he assembled 45 Below Records, which included rappers Alias, JD Walker, and producer DJ Moodswing9 (then known as Cuz the Highlander). Sole and Moodswing9 released the album ''Mad Skillz and Unpaid Billz'' together as Northern Exposure, selling more than 300 copies.
