Theakston, North Yorkshire
Theakston is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 143. Geography The village is situated just west of the A1(M) motorway, and is about three miles south-east of Bedale. The B6285 road passes through the village. History Etymology In the Domesday Book the place is recorded as ''Eston'', in the 13th to 16th century as Texton, Thexton, or Thekeston and in the 17th century as Theakstone. The surname Theakston is derived from the name of the village. If the spelling "Thekeston" is assumed to be correct, the name of the village can be derived from the Old English given name ''Teodec'' and the suffix ''-tun'', meaning "The farm (tun) of Teodec". The name "Theakston" is also believed to derive from the name of the leader of a family settling the area during the Anglo-Saxon colonisation of England. Theakston Brewery
T&R Theakston is a brewery in the market town of Masham, North Yorkshire, England. The company is the sixteenth largest brewer in the UK by market share, and the second largest brewer under family ownership after Shepherd Neame. The brewery is also one of the last remaining in the UK to have an in-house cooperage. History T&R Theakston Ltd. was founded in 1827 by Robert Theakston and John Wood at the Black Bull pub and brewhouse in College Lane, Masham. By 1832, Theakston had sole ownership of the brewery and in 1875 he passed control over to his sons Thomas and Robert. Thomas and Robert Theakston formed the T&R Theakston partnership and constructed a new brewery on the Paradise Fields, a stone's throw away from the original site. Greg Theakston
Greg Allen Theakston (November 21, 1953 – April 22, 2019) was an American comics artist and illustrator who worked for numerous publishers. He is known for his independent publications as a comics historian under his Pure Imagination imprint, as well as for developing the Theakstonizing process used in comics restoration. He used the pseudonym Earl P. Wooten. Early career Greg Theakston became involved in the Detroit area fandom community, contributing to Detroit's Fantasy Fans and Comic-collector's Group on their fanzine ''The Fan Informer'' (1968–71), as well as his own publication, ''The Aardvark Annual'' (1968), and ''Titan''. James Paul Theakston (born 21 December 1970) is an English television presenter, producer, and actor. He co-presented the former Saturday morning BBC One children's show ''Live & Kicking'', alongside Zoe Ball between 1996 and 1999. He co-hosted BBC One's former music programme ''Top of the Pops'' between 1998 and 2003. He currently co-hosts the national breakfast show with Amanda Holden on Heart Radio. Joseph Theakston
Joseph Theakston (1772 – 14 April 1842) was a 19th-century British sculptor mainly working in the Hellenistic style. He was called the "ablest (most able) drapery or ornamental carver of his time". Life He was the son of John Theakston (1735-1780) of St Michael's Parish, Spurriergate in York and his wife, Sarah Hague (1744-1789). His father died when he was young.ODNB: Joseph Theakston He was apprenticed in 1786, at the standard age of 14, to the sculptor John Fisher of York. He was declared a Freeman stonemason in 1794 and went to London where he studied further under John Bacon the Elder, before becoming an assistant to John Flaxman and then Edward Hodges Baily. From 1818 to 1848, he was assistant to Francis Chantrey. He specialised in the foliage, torsos drapery and details, where Chantrey etc concentrated on faces and hands. The Black Sheep Brewery is a brewery in Masham in the Borough of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England. History The Black Sheep Brewery was established by Paul Theakston in 1991. Following a successful launch as a Business Expansion Scheme, it became a public limited company (plc) in 1992. Theakston had been managing director of Theakston Brewery, also in Masham, since 1968. He began at the age of 23, taking over from his father, Frank. Matthew Brown brewery bought Theakston Brewery following disagreements between members of the family and other shareholders. In 1987 Scottish & Newcastle succeeded Brown as owner. Theakston left in 1988, and after a hiatus of more than a year purchased the North Yorkshire Malt Roasting Company, originally part of the former Lightfoot's brewery site, from an animal feed company, in order to start a new brewery in Masham.
