The Yankee Consul (musical)
'' The Yankee Consul'', also known as the ''Lieutenant Commander'', is a comic opera in two acts with music by Alfred G. Robyn and a libretto by Henry Blossom. The opera premiered in Boston on 21 September 1903 at the Tremont Theatre. The premiere production was produced by Boston opera impresario Henry Wilson Savage, and starred Raymond Hitchcock as Abijah Booze. Comic Opera
Comic opera, sometimes known as light opera, is a sung dramatic work of a light or comic nature, usually with a happy ending and often including spoken dialogue. Forms of comic opera first developed in late 17th-century Italy. By the 1730s, a new operatic genre, ''opera buffa'', emerged as an alternative to '' opera seria''. It quickly made its way to France, where it became ''opéra comique'', and eventually, in the following century, French operetta, with Jacques Offenbach as its most accomplished practitioner. The influence of the Italian and French forms spread to other parts of Europe. A libretto (Italian for "booklet") is the text used in, or intended for, an extended musical work such as an opera, operetta, masque, oratorio, cantata or Musical theatre, musical. The term ''libretto'' is also sometimes used to refer to the text of major liturgical works, such as the Mass (liturgy), Mass, requiem and sacred cantata, or the story line of a ballet. Henry Blossom
Henry Martyn Blossom (May 10, 1866 – March 23, 1919) was an American playwright and lyricist. Biography Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he teamed with Victor Herbert on several popular operettas. His first Broadway musical project was ''The Yankee Consul'' (1904) for composer Alfred G. Robyn, after which he primarily wrote for Herbert, including ''Mlle. Modiste'' (1905), ''The Red Mill'' (1906), ''Baron Trenck'' (1911), '' The Only Girl'' (1914), ''The Princess Pat'' (1915), '' Eileen'' (1917), and '' Kiss Me Again'' (film version of ''Mlle. Modiste'', 1931). He also wrote "When Uncle Sam is Ruler of the Sea" with Victor Herbert in 1916, "It's Not the Uniform That Makes the Man" with A. Baldwin Sloane in 1917 and "I Want to Go Back to the War" with Percival Knight (music was by Raymond Hubbell) in 1919. Blossom was also involved with several shows that failed to reach Broadway. Raymond Hitchcock (October 22, 1865November 24, 1929) was an American silent film actor, stage actor, and stage producer, who appeared in, or produced 30 plays on Broadway from 1898 to 1928, and who appeared in the silent films of the 1920s. Biography He appeared first as a star in the character of Abijah Booze in ''The Yankee Consul'', and sang ''It Was Not Like This in the Olden Time''. In his stage career, Hitchcock went back and forth between dramatic roles and ones in comic opera. In 1905 he appeared on Broadway with John Bunny in ''Easy Dawson'', the two apparently playing firemen. Hitchcock also made several phonograph recordings, many of which survive. In 1907, Hitchcock was charged with the sexual abuse of two adolescent girls together with New York magnate William A. Chanler.
