The World, The Flesh And The Devil (1959 Film)
''The World, the Flesh and the Devil'' is a 1959 American science fiction doomsday film written and directed by Ranald MacDougall. The film stars Harry Belafonte, who was then at the peak of his film career. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world with very few human survivors. It is based on two sources: the 1901 novel '' The Purple Cloud'' by M. P. Shiel and the story "End of the World" by Ferdinand Reyher. Plot Black mine inspector Ralph Burton becomes trapped in a cave-in at a Pennsylvania coal mine. He can hear rescuers digging towards him, but after five days they slow down and then stop completely, along with the drainage pumps keeping the shaft from flooding. Ranald MacDougall
Ranald MacDougall (March 10, 1915 – December 12, 1973) was an American screenwriter who scripted such films as '' Mildred Pierce'' (1945), '' The Unsuspected'' (1947), ''June Bride'' (1948), and '' The Naked Jungle'' (1954), and shared screenwriting credit for 1963's ''Cleopatra''. He also directed a number of films, including 1957's '' Man on Fire'' with Bing Crosby and 1959's '' The World, the Flesh and the Devil'', both of which featured actress Inger Stevens. Biography Born in Schenectady, New York, MacDougall came from an impoverished working-class family. His father was a crane operator and union organizer, whose frequent strikes forced MacDougall to leave school before finishing the eighth grade to help support the family. Ralph Bunche Park is a small municipal public park in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of New York City, on First Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets.
