The Worker (Wagga)
''The Australian Worker'' was a newspaper produced in Sydney, New South Wales for the Australian Workers' Union. It was published from 1890 to 1950. History The newspaper had its origin in ''The Hummer'', "Official organ of the Associated Riverina Workers", a newspaper produced in Wagga Wagga in the depths of the 1890s depression on 19 October 1891. The paper was jointly funded by the Wagga branches of the Amalgamated Shearers' Union of Australasia and the General Workers' Union, which merged in 1894 to form the Australian Workers' Union. ''The Hummer'' was the first union-owned newspaper in New South Wales (there was a privately owned pro-labor paper called ''The Shearers' Record'' published by Andrews and Taylor), and was born out of the perception that many or most mainstream newspaper proprietors and editors were sufficiently hostile to Unionism to suppress or mutilate letters and news items sympathetic to workers' rights, and to come down heavily on the side of business o ... Hoe Press
R. Hoe & Company was a New York City-based printing press manufacturer established by Peter Smith, Matthew Smith (died 1822), and their brother-in-law, English emigrant Robert Hoe (1784–1833), in 1805 as Smith, Hoe & Company. Early years The company initially specialized in the manufacture of wooden hand printing presses, but later added saw-making. In 1819 the company expanded to printing presses. Peter Smith's iron Acorn press was announced to the trade in 1822. A replica of the Acorn press used to print the First Edition of the Book of Mormon in 1829 is on display at Brigham Young University–Idaho. After Smith's death, Hoe and his sons renamed the company and worked on improving existing machinery. In 1827 Hoe bought and improved a patent on wrought iron framed presses initially owned by Samuel Rust. David McKee Wright (6 August 1869 – 5 February 1928) was an Irish-born poet and journalist, active in New Zealand and Australia. Sir Albert Cherbury David Rivett, KCMG (4 December 1885 – 1 April 1961) was an Australian chemist and science administrator. Background and education Rivett was born at Port Esperance, Tasmania, Australia, a son of the Rev. Albert Rivett (1855–1934), a noted pacifist. He studied at Wesley College, Melbourne and the University of Melbourne, where he was a member of Queen's College, Melbourne, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in 1906 and a Doctor of Science degree in 1913. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Lincoln College, Oxford, where he did research under the supervision of Nevil Sidgwick in the laboratories of Magdalen College, Oxford. Albert Dorrington
Albert Dorrington (27 September 1874 – 9 April 1953) was an English writer, active in Australia, who was born in Fulham, London, England. Life Dorrington arrived in Australia around 1890 as a sixteen-year-old and after brief stays in Melbourne and Adelaide, he traveled for many years through the back-country of New South Wales and Queensland as a newspaper and advertising canvasser. He began contributing to '' The Bulletin'' in 1895 and by 1899 had settled to live in Sydney. He took employment as a replater of silverware and lived with Leonora Anderson, who bore him several daughters. He left Australia in 1907 complaining bitterly of the closed literary establishment there and returned to England, where he remained for the rest of his life. He died in Ruislip on 9 April 1953. Walter Woods (politician)
Walter Alan Woods (28 December 1861 – 28 February 1939) was an Australian Labor politician and journalist. He was born Walter William Head at Oakleigh, Victoria on 28 December 1861. He later used various names throughout his life. Parliamentary career In 1906 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly for North Hobart, representing the Labor Party; with the introduction of proportional representation in 1909 he was elected as one of the members for Denison. He served as Speaker of the House from 1914 to 1916. In 1917 he resigned to contest the Senate election but was unsuccessful. Re-elected to the House in 1925, he was re-appointed Speaker in 1926, serving until 1928. Woods was defeated in 1931 and died in 1939 at Hobart.
