The Wipers
Wipers was a punk rock band formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Greg Sage, along with drummer Sam Henry and bassist Dave Koupal. The group's tight song structure and use of heavy distortion were hailed as extremely influential by numerous critics and musicians. They are also considered to be the first Pacific Northwest punk band. History Origins Sage's intense interest in music began with cutting records at home as an adolescent. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Sage soon picked up the guitar, and in 1969, at age 17, he played on an eponymous album by professional wrestler Beauregarde. James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942September 18, 1970) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. ''Land of the Lost'' is the fourth studio album by punk rock band Wipers, released by Restless in 1986. It was reissued on CDR on frontman Greg Sage's Zeno Records, and by German label Gift of Life in 1991. Critical reception ''Maximum Rocknroll'' praised the title track, writing: "Heavier and riffier than anything the Wipers had previously attempted, 'Land of the Lost' hits like a steamroller on an inexorable march forward." ''Straight Ahead'' is the debut solo album of Wipers frontman Greg Sage. It was released in 1985. Half the album consists of just Sage accompanied by his acoustic guitar. Modern Rock
Modern rock is an umbrella term used to describe rock music that is found on college rock radio stations. Some radio stations use this term to distinguish themselves from classic rock, which is based in 1960s–1980s rock music. Originally released on Brain Eater Records and Greg Sage's label, Trap, in 1983, it was later reissued by Restless Records, and then reissued and remastered on Sage's Zeno Records as part of the '' Wipers Box Set''. ''Youth of America'' is the second studio album by American punk rock band Wipers. It was released in 1981 by record label Park Avenue. Content The album marked a distinctive change in the band's sound. Compared to its predecessor, ''Is This Real?'', which was composed mostly of raw, sleek and relatively traditional songs, ''Youth of America'' featured much longer and more complex compositions; the title track alone clocks in at over 10 minutes. According to frontman Greg Sage, this change of pace was a deliberate counter-reaction against the trend of releasing short songs, which many punk bands did at the time. Alien Boy
"Alien Boy" is the seventh song on the first Wipers album, ''Is This Real?'' (Park Avenue Records), released in 1980. ''Alien Boy'' is also the title of a 1980 Wipers EP, with "Alien Boy" on side A, and three outtakes from the ''Is This Real?'' album sessions on side B. In 1993, the tracks were added to the Sub Pop reissue of the album ''Is This Real?''. The ''Alien Boy'' EP cover art featured on the back of the Sub Pop version of ''Is This Real?'' was not the original; instead, Sub Pop used the cover art of the German version of the ''Alien Boy'' EP, released in 1987 on the label Weird System, a special limited edition of 2,000 numbered copies on green vinyl. The Rats (American Band)
The Rats were an American garage punk band from Portland, Oregon, formed by Fred Cole previously of the garage rock band, The Lollipop Shoppe. Cole played guitar and sang, his wife, "Toody" played bass and sang, and initially Rod Rat played drums. Their sound was a raw mix of punk rock with occasional country touches. Their self-titled debut album appeared on Cole's Whizeagle label in 1980. Soon after, Rod Rat left the band, though he guested on the 1981 follow-up ''Intermittent Signals'' before his death by suicide. (Prior to his suicide Rod Rat (aka Rod Hibbert) also played drums in 1980-81 for Portland power pop band Domino Theory). Sam Henry, formerly of the Wipers, played drums on this LP but left to join another Portland band, Napalm Beach. Cult Following
A cult following refers to a group of fans who are highly dedicated to some person, idea, object, movement, or work, often an artist, in particular a performing artist, or an artwork in some medium. The lattermost is often called a cult classic. A film, book, musical artist, television series, or video game, among other things, is said to have a cult following when it has a small but very passionate fanbase. Is This Real?
''Is This Real?'' is the debut studio album by the Portland, Oregon-based punk rock band Wipers, originally released on vinyl in January 1980 by Park Avenue Records. The album was reissued on CD by Sub Pop in 1993, augmented by the three tracks from the ''Alien Boy'' EP. In 2001, it was digitally remastered by Sage and reissued again on his own Zeno Records as part of a 3-CD set, with the track list altered so that the song "Alien Boy" appeared together with the other three tracks from the ''Alien Boy'' EP, after "Wait a Minute". It was reissued on LP by Jackpot Records in 2006, remastered again from the original tapes that Sage provided to the label.
