The Week In Politics
''The Week in Politics'' is an Irish news and current affairs programme broadcast on RTÉ One and the RTÉ News channel. It is presented by Áine Lawlor, occasionally by Sharon Ní Bheoláin or Paul Cunningham. In its original format in 1996 it was hosted by Caroline Erskine and Seán Duignan. The programme reflects on the political week, with interviews and discussions. The majority of guests are politicians who are Teachtaí Dála or Irish Senators. The programme is broadcast live at noon on Sunday and is repeated throughout the day on the RTÉ News channel and its traditional late night slot on RTÉ One. The programme moved from its late night slot to midday in January 2013. The programme went off the air for seven weeks in early 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. It returned at the end of April. Áine Lawlor
Áine Lawlor (born 1961) is an Republic of Ireland, Irish radio and television broadcaster who has hosted many shows on RTÉ Radio 1. She has worked on various news and current affairs radio and television programmes, including ''News at One'', ''The Week in Politics'', ''Today with Pat Kenny'', ''Today at 5'', ''The Nature of Things'', ''Tuesday File'', ''Today Tonight (Ireland), Today Tonight'', ''The Marian Finucane Show'' and ''One to One (TV series), One to One''. COVID-19 Pandemic In The Republic Of Ireland
The COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Ireland is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In the Republic of Ireland, it has resulted in 1,687,668 cases and 8,293 deaths. 89.4% of those who died were aged over 65 and 76% had underlying illnesses with a median age of death at 82 years old. During 2020 and 2021, the country had one of the world's lowest excess death rates, which is an overall indicator of the pandemic's impact, at an estimated 12.5 deaths per 100,000 population. The virus reached the country in late February 2020 and cases soon confirmed in all counties. Commission To Inquire Into Child Abuse
The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (CICA) was one of a range of measures introduced by the Irish Government to investigate the extent and effects of abuse on children from 1936 onwards. Commencing its work in 1999, it was commonly known in Ireland as the Laffoy Commission after its chair, Justice Mary Laffoy. Laffoy resigned as chair in 2003 and was succeeded by Justice Sean Ryan, with the commission becoming known as the Ryan Commission. It published its final public report, commonly referred to as the Ryan report, in 2009.
