The Vows
''The Vows'' ( pt, A Promessa) is a 1973 Portuguese drama film directed by António de Macedo. It was entered into the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. Synopsis Maria do Mar and her husband, José, are young newlyweds living in a fishing village, Palheiros de Tocha, between Aveiro and Figueira da Foz. Their intimacy is disturbed, however, by a vow of chastity they took as a result of a storm that caused the shipwreck of José's father's boat. Both live in permanent tension, caused by the presence of Labareda, a gypsy taken in by the couple following a dispute in which he was stabbed. António De Macedo
António de Macedo (5 July 1931 − 5 October 2017) was Portuguese filmmaker, writer, university professor and lecturer. He gave up filmmaking in the 1990s as he felt systematically excluded from the state support programs of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the only financial source for film production in Portugal in that time. As a consequence, he dedicated himself entirely to writing, investigation and teaching. He published several books, essays, philosophy and fiction. Biography Filmmaker Macedo was born in Lisbon, where he graduated in architecture at the ESBAL (Escola Superior de Belas-Artes), the Faculty of Fine Arts, in 1958. From then until 1964, he worked as an architect in the Town Hall of Lisbon. He abandoned his architect career in 1964 to devote himself to filmmaking as director and scriptwriter. Bernardo Santareno is the pseudonym of António Martinho do Rosário (November 19, 1920 – August 20, 1980), a Portuguese writer. Life He was born in 1920, in Santarém, Ribatejo, to Maria Ventura Lavareda and Joaquim Martinho do Rosário. He completed highschool in Santarém, at Liceu Nacional de Sá da Bandeira, in 1939. Graduated in Psychiatry from Universidade de Coimbra in 1950. Died aged 59 in Oeiras. In 1957/58 worked as an on-board physician in the Portuguese cod fishing fleet, an experience that inspired, among other writings, his sole prose effort. His left-wing stance often put him at odds with the Estado Novo dictatorship.
