''The Virgin'' is the 1985 debut novel by Nigerian writer Bayo Adebowale. The novel, published in 1985, narrated the dilemma of a young village girl who after being deflowered must choose between three suitors, and agonizes about her secret being discovered on her wedding night. Scholar Wendy Griswold classifies ''The Virgin'' as a "village novel", a book that deals with the mores of a traditional Nigerian village, in the same vein as some works by Chinua Achebe. __NOTOC__ Plot A girl from a Yoruba village is engaged to a hunter from another village. Bayo Adebowale
Bayo Adebowale (born 6 June 1944) is a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, critic, librarian and founder of the African Heritage Library and Cultural Centre, Adeyipo, Ibadan Oyo State Early life and education He was born on 6 June 1944 in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Southwestern Nigeria into the family of Akangbe Adebowale, who was a farmer. Bayo obtained his West African School Certificate from Secondary Modern School Ibadan in 1958 after which he proceeded to St Peter's Teacher College where he received the Grade III certificate in education in 1961. He was admitted to Baptist College in Ede where he obtained a Grade II Teacher certificate. The Third Generation of Nigeria Writers is an emerging phase of Nigerian literature, in which there is a major shift in both the method of publishing and the Theme (arts), themes explored. ''The Narrow Path'' is a 2006 Nigerian film, produced and directed by Tunde Kelani. The film was adapted from '' The Virgin'', a novel written by Bayo Adebowale. Plot summary The film follows the story of Awero, a young woman living in the village of Orita South-West Nigeria during the colonial era. Awero was a beautiful virgin whom all the men in the village want to marry. She was involved in a love triangle-esque relationship between Odejimi a brave hunter and Lapade a rich jewellery merchant. She later accepted to marry Odejimi a brave hunter from another village but was raped by Dauda her childhood friend before her traditional ceremony. However, a dark secret is revealed on their wedding night, causing a rift between the villages of Orita and Agbade and bringing them to the brink of war.
