Fons Rademakers
Alphonse Marie "Fons" Rademakers (5 September 1920 – 22 February 2007) was a Dutch actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter. His 1960 film '' Makkers Staakt uw Wild Geraas'' was entered into the 11th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Award. During a career spanning several decades he directed 11 films, including '' The Assault'', which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1986, and ''The Village on the River'', nominated for the same award in 1959. Making him both the first Dutch director to be nominated and win this award. He granted a wide-ranging interview to Radio Netherlands in 1987. He died in 2007 in a Geneva hospital of emphysema, after the life-support machines were switched off at his request. This is a list of submissions to the 32nd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 32nd Academy Awards, thirteen films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The Netherlands, Pakistan, Hong Kong and Singapore submitted films for the first time. The Golden Bear (german: Goldener Bär) is the highest prize awarded for the best film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The bear is the heraldic animal of Berlin, featured on both the coat of arms and flag of Berlin. History The winners of the first Berlin International Film Festival in 1951 were determined by a West German panel, with five winners of the Golden Bear, divided by categories and genres.
