9th Berlin International Film Festival
The 9th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 26 June – 7 July 1959. The festival welcomed the cinematic movement known as the New Wave and screened the work of directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda and François Truffaut. The Golden Bear was awarded to the French film '' Les Cousins'' directed by Claude Chabrol. West Berlin
West Berlin (german: Berlin (West) or , ) was a political enclave which comprised the western part of Berlin during the years of the Cold War. Although West Berlin was de jure not part of West Germany, lacked any sovereignty, and was under military occupation until German reunification in 1990, the territory was claimed by the West Germany, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) which was heavily disputed by the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries. However, West Berlin de facto aligned itself politically with the FRG on 23 May 1949, was directly or indirectly represented in its federal institutions, and most of its residents were citizens of the FRG. Charles Walters
Charles Powell Walters (November 17, 1911 – August 13, 1982) was an American Hollywood director and choreographer most noted for his work in MGM musicals and comedies from the 1940s to the 1960s. Early years Charles Walters was born in Pasadena, California, the son of Joe Walter and Winifred Taft Walter, who had moved from Tomah, Wisconsin. He changed his last name to Walters in the 1930s because he was "tired of misspellings". Walters was educated at Anaheim Union High School (Class of 1930) and briefly attended the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. ''Ask Any Girl'' is a 1959 American romantic comedy film directed by Charles Walters and starring David Niven, Shirley MacLaine, and Gig Young. Gilles Grangier (5 May 1911 – 27 April 1996) was a French film director and screenwriter. He directed more than 50 films and several TV series between 1943 and 1985. His film '' Archimède le clochard'' was entered into the 9th Berlin International Film Festival, where Jean Gabin won the Silver Bear for Best Actor. ''Archimède le clochard'' is a 1959 French drama film directed by Gilles Grangier. It is also known as ''The Magnificent Tramp''. Katina Paxinou
Katina Paxinou ( gr, Κατίνα Παξινού; 17 December 1900– 22 February 1973) was a Greek film and stage actress. She started her stage career in Greece in 1928 and was one of the founding members of the National Theatre of Greece in 1932. The outbreak of World War II found her in the United Kingdom and she later moved to the United States, where she made her film debut in ''For Whom the Bell Tolls'' (1943) and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. Oddleiv Sigurd Bang Hølaas (27 March 1898 – 2 March 1968) was a Norwegian journalist and writer. He won the Riksmål Society Literature Prize in 1964. He was born in Tveit as a son of physician Oddleiv Magne Hølaas (1869–1915) and Aasta Bang (1867–1953). He was a paternal grandson of Andreas Hølaas. He finished secondary education in 1917, and was hired in the newspaper '' Christianssands Tidende''. Already in 1918 he went on to '' Nationen'', and in 1924 to ''Tidens Tegn''. In July 1926 he married Kjellaug Skajaa (1906–1990). He remained in ''Tidens Tegn'' until 1940. The newspaper was closed in 1941.
