The Vignelli Center For Design Studies
The Vignelli Center for Design Studies, established in 2010, is a college of design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Named after the New York City based Italian designers, Massimo and Lella Vignelli, this 15,500 square foot facility also holds the archives of their work as Vignelli Associates. History The Vignelli Center for Design was created after Massimo and Lella Vignelli decided, in 2008, to donate the entire archive of their design work to Rochester Institute of Technology. A groundbreaking event took place on October 7, 2008, and the grand opening was held on September 16, 2010. Vignelli Associates was a design firm co-founded and run by Massimo and Lella Vignelli in New York City, from 1971 until 2014. Unimark International
Unimark International was an international design firm headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It was founded in 1965 by six partners: Ralph Eckerstrom, Lella and Massimo Vignelli, Bob Noorda, James Fogelman, Wally Gutches, and Larry Klein. Although they were not listed as founding partners, Jay Doblin and Robert Moldafsky joined the new firm almost immediately. Initially, Unimark had three offices: Chicago, Milan and New York. The American branches were founded by Vignelli and his wife Lella, who subsequently founded Vignelli Associates. Additional offices opened around the world, but these were often short-lived as the client base and funding varied, and as American and global economic issues influenced the viability of each office. Lester Beall (1903 – 1969) was an American graphic designer who was a leading proponent of modernist graphic design in the United States. Biography Lester Thomas Beall was born in Kansas City, Missouri. His family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and later to Chicago, Illinois. Beall earned a degree in art history from the University of Chicago and was active on the varsity track team coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg. Will Burtin
Will Burtin (1908-1972) was a graphic designer from Cologne, Germany, known for interrelating design and scientific concepts within his exhibits. He was an influential designer, educator, and theorist in Germany and the United States. He arrived in the United States in 1939 after fleeing Nazism in Germany. In the U.S., he worked for Fortune Magazine and as an educator at Pratt Institute and the Parsons School of Design. He designed many exhibits for companies, such as Eastman Kodak, IBM, the Smithsonian, Mead Paper, Union Carbide, Herman Miller Furniture, and United States Information Agency. He received many awards and recognition for his work including a gold medal from AIGA. Many of his exhibits were reviewed in major consumer magazines, such as ''Newsweek'' and ''Life Magazine''.
