The Unloved Woman (1940 Film)
''The Unloved Woman'' (Spanish:''La malquerida'') is a 1940 Spanish drama film directed by José López Rubio. It is based on the 1913 play of the same title by Jacinto Benavente. Synopsis Doña Raimunda and her daughter Acacia live in the El Soto hacienda. After becoming a widow, Raimunda contracted new marriages with Esteban, who is secretly in love with Acacia, who hates him. Esteban will try to get rid of all the men who court Acacia. José López Rubio y Herreros (13 December 1903 in Motril, Granada Province – 2 March 1996) was a Spanish playwright, screenwriter, film director, theatre historian and humorist. Rubio y Herreros worked in Hollywood as a songwriter for Paramount Pictures, and was nominated for an Oscar for ''Treasure of the Sierra Madre''. Jacinto Benavente
Jacinto Benavente y Martínez (12 August 1866 – 14 July 1954) was one of the foremost Spanish dramatists of the 20th century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922 "for the happy manner in which he has continued the illustrious traditions of the Spanish drama". Biography Born in Madrid, the son of a celebrated pediatrician, he returned drama to reality by way of social criticism: declamatory verse giving way to prose, melodrama to comedy, formula to experience, impulsive action to dialogue and the play of minds. Benavente showed a preoccupation with aesthetics and later with ethics. A liberal monarchist and a critic of socialism, he was a reluctant supporter of Francoist Spain as the only viable alternative to what he considered the disastrous republican experiment of 1931–1936.
