The Unknown Revolution
''The Unknown Revolution'' is a 1947 history of the Russian Revolution by Voline. Publication Voline finished the book in 1940 while in Marseilles. After his death in 1945, it was first published posthumously in 1947. Following 1968 events in France, the book was republished in French paperback without additional editorial content by as part of a series by Daniel Guérin and Jean-Jacques Lebel. The book was translated into English in two parts by the Libertarian Book Club. The first volume, ''Nineteen-Seventeen: The Russian Revolution Betrayed'', in 1954, and the second volume, ''The Unknown Revolution: Kronstadt 1921, Ukraine 1918–21'', in 1956. Reception and legacy Historian of anarchism Paul Avrich wrote that Voline's book was "the most important anarchist history of the Russian Revolution in any language". Vsevolod Mikhailovich Eikhenbaum (russian: Все́волод Миха́йлович Эйхенба́ум; 11 August 188218 September 1945), commonly known by his psuedonym Volin (russian: Во́лин), was a Anarchism in Russia, Russian anarchist intellectual. He became involved in revolutionary socialism, revolutionary socialist politics during the 1905 Russian Revolution, for which he was forced into exile, where he gravitated towards anarcho-syndicalism. He returned to Petrograd following the February Revolution of 1917 and propagandised for anarcho-syndicalism in the Russian capital. But in the wake of the October Revolution, which he criticised due to the predominance of the Bolsheviks, he left for Ukraine, where he became a leading figure in the Makhnovshchina. Fredy Perlman (20 August 1934 – 26 July 1985) was an American author, publisher, and activist. His best-known work, ''Against His-Story, Against Leviathan!'', retells the historical rise of state domination through the Hobbesian metaphor of the Leviathan. Early life Perlman was born August 20, 1934, in Brno, Czechoslovakia, to Henry and Martha Perlman. His family immigrated to the United States when he was young. Perlman received a master's degree from Columbia University and a PhD from University of Belgrade. He married Lorraine Nybakken in January 1958. Professional life His best-known work, ''Against His-Story, Against Leviathan'' (1983) rewrites the history of humanity as a struggle of free people ("zeks") resisting the sovereign nation-state (Leviathan).
