The Unknown Photographer
''The Unknown Photographer'' (French: ''Le photographe inconnu'') is a 2015 Quebec virtual reality work based around found photographs of World War I, co-produced by the digital production agency Turbulent and the National Film Board of Canada's French-language Digital Studio, both located in Montreal. The lead artists on the project were Loïc Suty (director, sound designer, scriptwriter), Osman Zeki (lead developer, 3D modeler) and Claudine Matte (art director). The work was produced by Claire Buffet and Louis-Richard Tremblay, with executive producers Marc Beaudet, Benoit Beauséjour and Hugues Sweeney. Virtual reality (VR) is a simulated experience that employs pose tracking and 3D near-eye displays to give the user an immersive feel of a virtual world. Applications of virtual reality include entertainment (particularly video games), education (such as medical or military training) and business (such as virtual meetings). Other distinct types of VR-style technology include augmented reality and mixed reality, sometimes referred to as extended reality or XR, although definitions are currently changing due to the nascence of the industry. François Papineau
François Papineau (born 24 December 1966) is a Canadian actor who worked in stage and the Cinema of Quebec for over 25 years. Papineau graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1990. He was nominated for the Genie Award for Best Actor for '' Route 132'' (2010). In 2015, he joined the cast of director Benoît Pilon's film ''Iqaluit'', alongside Marie-Josée Croze and Natar Ungalaaq. World War I In Popular Culture
The First World War, which was fought between 1914 and 1918, had an immediate impact on popular culture. The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is the world's largest documentary film festival held annually since 1988 in Amsterdam. Catherine Mavrikakis
Catherine Mavrikakis (born January 7, 1961) is a Canadian academic and award-winning writer living in Quebec. The daughter of a Greek father who grew up in Algeria and a French mother, she was born in Chicago and grew up in Anjou, Montréal-Nord, St. Leonard, in France and in the United States. She settled in Montreal in 1979. From 1993 to 2003, she taught at Concordia University. In 2003, she joined the department of French language literature at the Université de Montréal. The term found photography can be used as a synonym for ''found photos'': photographs, usually anonymous, that were not originally intended as art but have been given fresh aesthetic meaning by an artist’s eye. “Found photography” can also refer more broadly to art that incorporates found photos as material, assembling or transforming them in some fashion.
