The Tsarevich (1933 Film)
''The Tsarevich'' (German: ''Der Zarewitsch'') is a 1933 German historical musical film directed by Victor Janson and starring Mártha Eggerth, Hans Söhnker and Ery Bos. It is based on the 1927 operetta ''Der Zarewitsch'' by Franz Lehar. It was one of a number of operetta film that Eggerth appeared in during the decade. The film's sets were designed by Walter Haag and Franz Schroedter. A separate French-language version ' was also released. Operetta Film
Operetta films (German: Operettenfilm) are a genre of musical films associated with, but not exclusive to, German language cinema. The genre began in the late 1920s, but its roots stretch back into the tradition of nineteenth century Viennese operettas. Although some silent films had based their plots on stage operettas, the genre was largely a result of the switch from silent to sound films. The 1929 film ''Melody of the Heart'', made by the German studio UFA, is credited as being the first "Operetta film". It had been intended as a silent film, but the dramatic arrival of sound forced its production to be switched. Its combination of music and dancing proved to be a successful formula, and it was followed by many similar films. Hans Joachim Schaufuß
Hans Joachim Schaufuß (transliterated: Schaufuss) (28 December 1918 – 27 October 1941) was a German actor. Schaufuß began as a child actor, appearing in '' Emil and the Detectives'' (1931) and '' The White Demon'' (1932). From the mid-1930s he began to appear in more mature roles. He was killed in Oryol in the Soviet Union while serving on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. Biography Schaufuß was the son of stage and film actor Hans Hermann Schaufuß and the older brother of actor Peter-Timm Schaufuß. Following his role in ''Emil and the Detectives'', from the mid-1930s he began to appear in more mature film roles. Max Walter Gülstorff (23 March 1882 – 6 February 1947) was a German actor and stage director. Biography Gülstorff was born in Tilsit, East Prussia. He first appeared in 1900 at the Rudolstadt municipal Theater and moved to Cottbus in 1908. In 1911 Gülstorff went to the ''Schillertheater'' Berlin and became a member of the ensemble of Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater in 1915. He also acted at the Großes Schauspielhaus and the Volksbühne Berlin. In 1923 Gülstorff moved to Vienna, where he worked as a stage director at the Theater in der Josefstadt The Theater in der Josefstadt is a theater in Vienna in the eighth district of Josefstadt. Paul Otto Schlesinger (8 February 1878 – 25 or 30 November 1943) was a German film actor and director. Born in Berlin, he began a qualification as a retail merchant and made his actor's debut at the age of 17. Otto worked at Theaters in Halle, Wiesbaden and Hanover before he returned to Berlin about 1906. He first appeared in the silent film ''Ringkampf Konkurrenz'' in 1910 and in ''Arsène Lupin contra Sherlock Holmes'' (1910-11, five episode film serial) next to Viggo Larsen. In 1912 Otto directed his first own film ''Selbstgerichtet''. In the beginning of the 1930s he also appeared in successful Sound movies like '' Der Hauptmann von Köpenick''. Otto Wallburg
Otto Wallburg (21 February 1889 – 29 October 1944) was a German actor and Kabarett performer. He was a prolific film actor during the late silent and early sound era. Wallburg was born Otto Maximilian Wasserzug in Berlin, the son of a Jewish banker. He drifted into stage acting, but served in the German Army during the First World War and was wounded on the Eastern Front after winning an Iron Cross. From 1926 onwards he worked in the large German film industry, including many productions made by UFA. When the Nazis came to power in 1933 he left Germany and moved to Austria where he continued to work in film. He later moved to France and then on to the Netherlands. He was arrested following the 1940 German invasion of the Netherlands. He was held for a while at Westerbork transit camp, and later moved to Auschwitz where he was killed.
