''The True Jacob'' (german: Der wahre Jakob) is a 1931 German comedy film directed by Hans Steinhoff and starring Ralph Arthur Roberts, Anny Ahlers, and Felix Bressart. It is based on a play by Franz Arnold and Ernst Bach which has been adapted into numerous films. The film's sets were designed by the art director Franz Schroedter. Hans Steinhoff
Hans Steinhoff (10 March 1882 – 20 April 1945) was a German film director, best known for the propaganda films he made in the Nazi era. Life and career Steinhoff started his career as a stage actor in the 1900s and later worked as a stage director. He directed his first silent film ''Clothes Make the Man (1921 film), Clothes Make the Man'', the adaption of a novel by Gottfried Keller, in 1921. Steinhoff was a convinced Nazi and directed many propaganda films, he sometimes even wore his Nazi party membership button on the film set. His most notable films were perhaps ''Hitlerjunge Quex (film), Hitlerjunge Quex'' (1933), an influential propaganda film for the Hitler Youth, and ''Ohm Krüger'' (1940), for which he won the Mussolini Cup at the 1941 Venice Film Festival. On April 20, 1945, during the last war days, Steinhoff tried to escape from Berlin on the last scheduled Lufthansa flight. Hansi Arnstaedt
Hansi Arnstaedt (8 December 1878 – 8 May 1945) was a German film actress. Her role subject was that of the frisky and naive, later she was seen in character roles. In 1913, she was given the role of the title character in Franz Porten's three-part film biography about Queen Luise. After that, she did not appear in films again until 1930. Mostly she was now a supporting actress, sometimes, as in 1940 in Lauter Liebe as the mother of Hertha Feiler, she took on larger roles. She was on the Gottbegnadeten list of the Reich Ministry for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda in 1944. Wilhelm Diegelmann
Wilhelm Diegelmann (28 September 1861 – 1 March 1934) was a German actor. Career Diegelmann's first stage appearance was in 1878 in the chorus for the Frankfurt Opera. In 1881 he debuted at the Frankfurt City Theater, playing King Lear, William Tell, and other title characters. Sometime around 1900, Diegelmann relocated to Berlin. Here, he appeared at a variety of theaters, including the Deutsches Theater, the Großes Schauspielhaus, and the Deutsches Künstlertheater. Diegelmann was introduced to film in 1913 by Max Reinhardt. he became a prolific actor of supporting roles, often as a father figure. He performed in the well-known film '' Der Blaue Engel'' (The Blue Angel), where he played a ship captain who flirts with the lead actress (Marlene Dietrich). The final film he starred in was the Theodor Storm adaptation of ''Der Schimmelreiter'' (The Rider on the White Horse). Julius Falkenstein (25 February 1879 – 9 December 1933) was a German stage and film actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 180 films between 1914 and 1933. Falkenstein was Jewish, but secured a special permit to continue making films following the Nazi rise to power in 1933. He died of natural causes the same year, having made only one further film.
