''The Toy That Grew Up'' is an American television series produced by WTTW, the Chicago affiliate of the National Educational Television (NET) network that showed complete and uninterrupted silent films. It was an introduction to silent films for many Americans. It lasted from 1962 to 1972. The theme music used for the program is ''The Curse of an Aching Heart''. History Beginning in August 1960 a keen cinephile named Robert C. Seipp (1930-2008) acquired the rights to show over a hundred mostly American made silent films; 90% came from private collections. Seipp researched each film he presented with a pipe organ score provided by former cinema organist Hal Pearl (1908-2000); the on screen host of the show was Don Ferris. WTTW
WTTW (channel 11) is a PBS member television station in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Owned by not-for-profit broadcaster Window to the World Communications, Inc., it is sister to commercial classical music radio station WFMT (98.7 FM). The two stations share studios in the Renée Crown Public Media Center, located at 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue (adjacent to the main campus of Northeastern Illinois University) in the city's North Park neighborhood; its transmitter facility is atop the Willis Tower on South Wacker Drive in the Chicago Loop. WTTW also owns and operates The Chicago Production Center, a video production and editing facility that is operated alongside the three stations. Fractured Flickers
''Fractured Flickers'' is a live-action syndicated half-hour television comedy show that was produced by Jay Ward, who is otherwise known for cartoons. The pilot film was produced in 1961 (hence the 1961 copyright notice on the animated main title), but the series was not completed until 1963. Twenty-six episodes were produced; they were syndicated by Desilu Productions and played for several years on local stations. Content Host Hans Conried introduced short "flickers" pieced together from silent film footage and from other older films, overdubbed with newly written comic dialogue, music, and sound effects. The voices for these were provided by fellow Ward mainstays Paul Frees, June Foray, and Bill Scott. In films, an intertitle, also known as a title card, is a piece of filmed, printed text edited into the midst of (i.e., ''inter-'') the photographed action at various points. ''Hollywood and the Stars'' is a 1963 NBC television documentary series produced by the David L. Wolper Production Company in association with United Artists Television. It was narrated by Joseph Cotten with the theme music and several episodes composed by Elmer Bernstein. Jack Haley, Jr. was the series' producer for all its 31 episodes. He also wrote four episodes and directed 22 episodes. He also produced the hour-long pilot episode "The Great Stars" (narrated by Henry Fonda), originally syndicated in February 1963. National Educational Television
National Educational Television (NET) was an American non-commercial educational, educational terrestrial television, broadcast television network owned by the Ford Foundation and later co-owned by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. It operated from May 16, 1954 to October 4, 1970, and was succeeded by the PBS, Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), which has network affiliate#Member stations, memberships with many television stations that were formerly part of NET. The Funny Manns
''The Funny Manns'' is an American syndicated television program that first appeared in 1961. It was hosted by Cliff Norton and featured re-edited public domain silent movies, much as Jay Ward's show Fractured Flickers did. There are 130 black & white episodes produced for NBC. The show was co-produced by Nick Nicholson, who sometimes performed on the show's skits with Norton. It was broadcast by the BBC in the United Kingdom. The program would always begin with Cliff Norton as some type of handyman, whether it was a painter, repairman, or even a plumber, and as he began dialog, he would use the lines "I learned everything I know from my (Uncle/Father/etc.)," and "Alright, who's the funny man?" Then, it would cut to the edited silent films. Hal Pearl
Hal Pearl (November 13, 1908 - November 22, 2000) was a Chicago-based pianist and organist. He had an over 75-year performing career and probably was the last surviving silent movie accompanist. Initially a cinema organist, Hal Pearl was first known as "Chicago's Youngest Organist" and later "The King of the Organ." Hal's concerts included his popular "sing-along" allowing audience participation with the lyrics being shown on the main screen. They always ended in a tongue twister so the audience couldn't complete the last song and ended up laughing. Hal had over 20,000 songs memorized and could play them as needed. He wrote his signature piece ''Let Come What May'' and released several records including ''Memories of the Aragon With Hal Pearl at The Mighty Wurlitzer'' and ''Singing Canaries.''
