The Thomists is a 21-piece big band based at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. History The Thomists was formed in affiliation with St. Thomas University in 1965 by Professor Harry Rigby, and it was soon playing at parties and dances on campus. The band has continued to play across the Maritimes and beyond for over 45 years, and has over 900 pieces in its repertoire. Fredericton (; ) is the capital city of the Canadian province of New Brunswick. A big band or jazz orchestra is a type of musical ensemble of jazz music that usually consists of ten or more musicians with four sections: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section. Big bands originated during the early 1910s and dominated jazz in the early 1940s when swing was most popular. The term "big band" is also used to describe a genre of music, although this was not the only style of music played by big bands. Big bands started as accompaniment for dancing.
