''The Tenterfield Star'', also published as ''The Tenterfield Star and New England Chronicle'' and ''The Tenterfield Record and Border Advertiser'', is a semi-weekly English language newspaper published in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia. History Publication of ''The Tenterfield Star'' began 10 August 1871, published by Duncan M'Master Cameron. It continues ''The Tenterfield Star and New England Chronicle'', published by Christopher Bentley, and absorbed ''The Tenterfield Record and Border Advertiser'', published by Frederick Samuel Grey from 16 January 1885 until approximately 1890. ''The Tenterfield Star'' was owned and operated in the late 1890s by Major J.F. Thomas, the solicitor who defended Harry "Breaker" Morant. The newspaper also played a part during this period in the Federation of Australia. ''The Tenterfield Star'' celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2010. Tenterfield, New South Wales
Tenterfield is a regional town in New South Wales, Australia. At the , Tenterfield had a population of 4,066. Tenterfield's proximity to many regional centres and its position on the route between Sydney and Brisbane led to its development as a centre for the promotion of the federation of Australia. The area of Tenterfield was named by German immigrant Sir Tye Cohn, who built Tenterfield station. Geography Tenterfield is located at the northern end of the New England region, at the intersection of the New England and Bruxner Highways. The town is the seat of the Tenterfield Shire. James Francis Thomas
Major James Francis Thomas (25 July 1861 – 11 November 1942), was a solicitor from Tenterfield, New South Wales. As Major Thomas, he defended Lieutenants Peter Joseph Handcock, George Ramsdale Witton, and Harry "Breaker" Morant, of the Bushveldt Carbineers (BVC) of the British Army, in their trial for the murder of nine Boer prisoners-of-war during the Second Boer War. Education He was educated at The King's School, Parramatta, and at the University of Sydney. Law He served as an articled clerk in a reputable Sydney law practice. He was (unconditionally) admitted to practise as a solicitor on 28 May 1887. ''Tenterfield Star'' He was also the owner-operator of the ''Tenterfield Star'' newspaper for sixteen years, from 1898. Harry "The Breaker" Harbord Morant (born Edwin Henry Murrant, 9 December 1864 – 27 February 1902), more popularly known as Breaker Morant, was an Anglo-Australian drover, horseman, bush poet, military officer, and war criminal who was convicted and executed for murdering six prisoners-of-war (POWs) and three captured civilians in two separate incidents during the Second Anglo-Boer War. While serving as a lieutenant with the Bushveldt Carbineers, Morant was arrested and court-martialled for committing murder on active serviceone of the first such prosecutions in British military history.
