The Sweet Sad Story Of Elmo And Me
"The Sweet Sad Story of Elmo and Me" is a 1965 Australian television film which aired on ABC as part of '' Wednesday Theatre''. It aired on 28 July 1965 in Melbourne and Sydney. A satire about suburbia, it was written by Canberra-based writer Ric Throssell and aired in a 60-minute time-slot. It was produced in ABC's Sydney studios by Henri Safran. According to one paper, "Throughout the play the author pokes his tongue at suburbia, materialism, education and television, among other things." Plot "Digger" Smith returns from World War II to his wife Shirl a baby girl, Betty, and a modest house in the suburbs. A happy, uncomplicated man, "Digger" Smith stays so until prosperity catches up with him and he makes strenuous efforts to "keep up with the Joneses." Betty's boyfriend is Elmo. Reg Gorman (2 August 1932 – 5 August 2021) was an Australian television and film actor, and comedian, he was known best for his role in TV serial ''The Sullivans'', as Jack Fletcher. and children's series ''Fergus McPhail'' as Harry Patterson. Doreen Warburton (22 March 1930 – 19 July 2017) was an Australian actress, director, and theatre co-founder. Biography Evelyn Doreen Warburton was born in London on 22 March 1930. At 18 she began her theatre career with the Theatre Workshop, a company where all performers received equal pay and which toured, not just England but also to Scandinavia and Germany. In 1953 she migrated to Australia to join her family, who had arrived in 1949 and seeking radio work. She made her Australian stage debut in ''The Shop at Sly Corner'' at the opening of the Apollo Theatre in Manly and then toured New South Wales in '' Love From a Stranger''. Henri Safran (born 7 October 1932) is a Paris-born director who worked extensively in Australia. He worked in French television, then in Britain, before moving to Australia in 1960 to work with the ABC. He became an Australian citizen in 1963 but returned to England in 1966 to work on British television.
